MF 3070 3rd gear

Anybody have any experience with the 4x4 16 speed sycro shuttle transmission. This one, once in a while jumps out of third gear on the road. I have not worked on anything newer than the 200 series. Thanks Guys. Joe in Ontario

Couple of things to check here. The main and lay shafts were mounted on tapered roller bearings. Any amount of wear in these bearings caused shaft end float, which, in turn caused the transmission to jump out of gear.
Also, the 1st-2nd, and 3rd-4th gear selectors were detented to the selector rail, so no adjustment was possible on them. But wear on the forks can, in time, cause the same problem.
Drain off the trans oil, and remove the selector side cover. Now, insert a screwdriver between the 3rd-4th fork, and the syncro coupler. Anymore than say, .025" clearance could cause your problem.
Now, insert the screwdriver between any gear on the top main shaft and the webbing inside the case. Any amount of movement discloses wear in the tapered carrier bearings on the shaft. These bearings are pre-loaded when adjusted correctly. So the bearings should be replaced. A loose retaining nut, on the front of the A-B gear cluster, could give you the same result, but this usually coincides with the A-B range change, jumping out of gear as well.
If you carry out a repair to these transmissions, I would recommend you source a genuine M.F. manual, as these models came thru not long after release, with an 1" thick wad of service bulletins. You will need all the info you can get your hands on!

Yes Joe,
The transmission can be removed if necessary, by separating the trans at the rear diff housing, and rolling the front axle, engine and transmission out to the front.
