mf-35 drive question

Hi all,

I do not normally post here as i have an 8n.

A friend from work has a mf35 that will not move when in gear, the pto runs fine and lift works, but when you put it in gear it will not budge. his son was driving and put it in reverse and moved it, and when he went to move forward it did nothing, he heard no pops or grinding. I have never worked on a Massey and will be getting a book as soon as i can.

I was just looking for some ideas as to what i should look for to get this fixed for him, as it is his only tractor and uses it to feed his horses.

thanks for any tips or ideas

Dave

Does the tractor stall when a forward gear is engaged? It sounds like it's stuck in reverse although the shifter has moved out. Otherwise maybe a selector fork has come adrift.

The first and most likely thing I would look at would be the pinion coupler/fuse coupler. This sounds harder to look at than it really is.

There is a coupler between the pinion shaft and the transmission output shaft, and this coupler has a groove cut in it so that if the rear end were to bind up, it would simply twist this coupler off rather than explode the rear end.

To check this, drain around 5 gallons of oil out of the rear end, just enough to get the oil level below the side cover where the PTO lever is (left foot). It is then i think (6) 7/16" bolts to take the cover off and look in the side of the transmission. This coupler will be the first thing you see, put it in gear and have someone "rock" the tractor back and forth and see if the coupler is twisted off.

If it is, it is about a $40 dollar part, and just pull the cotter pin out and it is replaceable without splitting the tractor.

As for the reason that it may be twisted off, that depends on the life this tractor has had. This is not a common issue, but I have had it happen to my own 35. It could have been cracked part way for a while, and finally decided to give.

The other likely failure is that it may have ripped the center out of the clutch disc- and there is no other fix than a new clutch for that.

Hope this helps

Hi,
Gearhead below has outlined the most likely cause of your problem. It is quite common for the split pin to drop out. The shear tube will then slide forward and you will lose all drive. If this is the case a new split pin should be fitted in the hole that gives the least end float on the main shaft. There must be no pressure on it. If you need to remove the shaft, it can be done through the LH side cover but patience will be required. Moving the Hi/Lo lever to High wil help. Removal of the footplate will also help. The photo shows the sheartube and split pin.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies, i did pull the pto cover off and found the coupler is broke. I have the parts on order and i hope to have him running again soon.

Thanks again for your help.
