I noticed i have a knocking sound coming from the bottom of the trans where the hydro pump is. I can put my hand on the side where the dipstick is and feel it. when the lift is all the way up it goes away let the lift lever down an inch it starts knocking let it down another inch it stops. everything still works fine. i was going to change the oil to 15w40 motor oil. i don't know if this is normal i don't want something to come apart and blow a hole in my trans.

A slight knocking sound is normal I believe. Design of the pump.

When the lift lever is all the way up, you are in constant pumping mode. When you slide it down that inch or so, you"re at maximum lift for the 3 point hitch.

Seek out user John(UK). He"s worked at a dealership for years and would be able to explain better than I can.

I have a MF 30 that done this check to see if the mounting pins that hold the pump in place are ok I had one break and the pump knocked. they are located on the rear housing and held in place with 2 bolts they are one the out side so it is easy to check them.

Dale, Do not continue to operate with the knock.
The knock is the pump blowing the relief valve.
Nothing major is likely wrong, only the settings
of the levers or remote valve.Time has erased the
proper setting from my mind but they need to be
lowered. Please don't use 15W40, but use a green
mineral 80 if avail or GL-1 or non foaming hyd
fluid. Chuck

Hello
The knocking should be only slightly, and you are certainly blowing the relief valve due to bad settings. My 135 will knock when lifting anything more than a plough, but if the pto is under load there will be no knocking at all. What happens is that the shafts and couplers rattles due to alternately draft/slack. Especially the 165 and bigger are prone to this, due to slightly higher pressure. By low temp. and foul filter, pump cavitates, and knocking is worse. Mine have beel rattling for 2000 hrs. but still works great.
