MF 35 Multi-Power Hard Shifting

Gas, starts and runs great. Had clutch done couple years ago, getting hard to shift, locks in gear almost, particularly when using PTO (mower, baler), and even in high mode when engine brake is not on. Seems more recently. But it will shift easily and normally if I rock the tractor a bit, clutch engaging, the shifting quickly with no tractor weight load on drivetrain.

Multipower tractors aren't expected to shift out of gear with multipower in hi. Shift to low and it works just fine. That's the nature of the beast. It has to do with the basic design of the transmission. If you stop while in hi and the tractor rolls back an inch the sprag clutch that is the low range drive will lock and make shifting to neutral difficult to impossible until you shift to low or kill the engine.

Apology, I could have been more clear, it didn't matter that I was in High or Low, it kinda locks up, until I rock it, but maybe I will look a bit closer at coming to a stop in Low more often?

So drove it this weekend, and in Low range, no PTO load, shifted fine. I wonder if this issue is mainly under PTO load, as I run in High mode on slopes to use the engine brake, but try to switch to Low mode when not on slope, but after a bit, the shifting issue starts even in Low mode?

As Dieseltech mentioned, clutch adjustment. Did you check that free play is adjusted as called for in the manual?

Thanks, end of season coming up so i'll have a look at the clutch adjustment, hoping not to have to split this tractor

Do you have the Operator's Manual? It gives the location and dimension to check the free play. It should take less than 5 minutes to check that dimension.
