MF 35 Power Steering

Good Afternoon to all!

I just bought a 1962 MF-35 with the perkins and power steering.

Heres my questions:
The Steering wheel has about 6 inches free play at the mid point. What could I do to correct?

The power steering worked intermittently when the previous owner bought the tractor but now is inop. I noticed fluid level low but are there any common problems with the power steering with these symptoms?

The perkins runs fine with no excessive blowby but has a cold miss. I plan on pulling the inj. and having them serviced. Did the perkins expierence injector issues.

the steering would get sloppy as no one ever greased the fittings and we would to take them apart to re- bush the arms. there is a adjustment screw that activates the power steering--it has to be fine tuned as it will work in one direction and not the other direction-the injector tips are replaceable as they wear-out from use -and the springs in the injectors get weak--best thing to do is pull them out for rebuild which is cheaper --the injector should crack at 1200psi

The IT manual leaves somethings to be desired.

Took the tractor on a two hour drive today and the smoke has died down a bit, But pretty sure the steering gear and p/s cyl. is shot, got the system to bleed and it will jerk the tractor to the right but you have to fight it to the left, pump is working both ways though. Then I looked down to find my right boot covered in a mixture of water and ATF from the cyl.,

Just to mention that it would be good to check your engine temperature after it has had enough time to be warmed up well, your looking for 180/190 degrees, if the tractor had been sitting and the age of the thermostat, it self could mean a new thermostat is needed. Running too cold will make a smoke, and a second sign is a coal black tarish liquid coming from the exhaust manifold/muffler fittings, if really running cold.
otherwise it sounds like your onto something good.
