Changing the fuel filters on a MF 396 and the new filters come with 3 large O rings but it looks like it only requires 2. Is there a reason for this?

Those same elements are used with filter housing that incorporate another section for better water separation between the element and the bowl, thus requiring the third gasket/seal ring. If your filter only has the element and bottom bowl, you do not use the third seal ring. The top seal goes up into a groove in the head of the housing that matches the rim of the element. Do not put a seal ring inside the top lip of the element. The groove around the inside of a WIX/NAPA element often leads people to put a seal in that groove, doing so will block the slots fuel has to flow through.

Hello JM, welcome to YT! The extra O-rings are supplied because the filters fit multiple applications. Also if you are using Wix or NAPA filter head the warning in this linked older YT post. Filter info
My uncle has a 396, it’s been a good tractor!
Edit: I saw the red banner pop up showing someone else posted while your post is in progress, seems Jim and I think alike.
