MF 50 clutch adjust?

also on this MF 50 im looking at you cant shift it into 1st with the engine running, it has to be off and started with it in first. the owner has just replaced the clutch and says it needs nothing more than a clutch adjustment from underneath. it is a double clutch setup? and can this be adjusted without having to split the tractor? thanks guy's

It might have a dual clutch. If the serial number starts with SGM (I think), it's dual clutch. First stage is for transmission, then after more resistance, it'll disengage the PTO. I think I read here that the under-tractor adjustment covers the PTO stage, which could explain the PTO grinding. Also check free play in the petal.

Hi Fred,
Eric is on the right track. If you can't engage the gears then there is next to nothing that can be done by adjustment underneath. If you press the pedal fully does this improve gear selection? Or are you only pressing it to the bottom of the first stage wherever that might be?
If it does it may be a case that the first stage is running into the second stage. If you are pressing down fully without any improvement then there may be a problem with the adjustment of the release arm screws. I suspect that they may not all be at the same height. This is something that the seller should have adjusted prior to rejoining. It should be possible but with some difficulty to move the release bearing into contact with the highest arm and check the position of the others and adjust them accordingly. It would be better to split the tractor but this might just save you the job.

hey David, thanks for response. i was able to shift in high and low ranges but could not shift into first after starting the tractor. could only shift into first with engine off. i didnt have a whole lot of time to play with this. and it was hard for aleast me to shift the PTO into gear, i could feel the teeth grinding.
so is it possible that something the owner did when installing this new clutch could be the problem and the only fix would be to have to split the tractor again? this would keep me from buying it.

How much free play do you have in the clutch pedal? It may be that there is so much freeplay that you aren't fully disengaging the transmission. If that is the case then you can't disengage the pto either. Just a thought.

Something doesn't add up here...

The owner has the mechanical ability to replace the clutch, but can not make the simple adjustment it needs now??

That just doesn't make sense to me.

Hi Fred,
Don't write the tractor off if the rest of it is good. You'd be looking at a cost of £150 $250-300 to split the tractor approximately. If you can get a substantial reduction in the price it might still be worth going for.

the owner was in an accident and has some pretty bad neck and shoulder injuries which is prevemting him from doing the clutch adjust.
this is all alittle confusing and what would make me have to split the tractor, thats the part i dont get?
i mean the owner installed a new dual clutch kit, is there something that has to be adjusted before the clutch even goes in that if you dont do would cause you to have to resplit the tractor? thats the part thats got me baffled.

Hi Fred,
There are two internat adjustments (photos) The height of the screws in the release arms is set using the special gauge once the clutch unit is fitted and the slave bolts removed. The photo with the spanners shows the setting for the second stage coming in as you press the pedal. This can be done through the inspection hole underneath. You may be able to do an approximate adjustment on the height of the release arms through the inspection hole but it will be approximate. The actual height and gap is not critical but that they are all the same is. With the difficulties that you are having it appears that splitting is the best way to get to the bottom of the problem. Once the tractor is split hopefully the problem will be visible.

It is possible, but not easy. More than likely if it was properly adjusted when installed and both of them needs adjusted, the clutch or clutches are worn out and need replacing anyway. You might buy yourself a little time by adjusting, but you might cost yourself a flywheel.

the owner just installed a brand new clutch kit when doing a restore. he put it back together then blasted and painted everything and then was involved in a car crash and cant do the adjustment do to his neck and shoulder injuries. i just wanted to make sure with you guys that this can be adjusted without splitting before i make the purchase....once again you Massey guys are great.....thanks a ton!!

Hey David i wanna thank you and all the guys for great info and you for the great pics with the setup tool which really clears up the whole thing on how these clutchs are set up.i now have a very good understanding of whats involved with this clutch.....Thanks

Hi Fred,
As mentioned the internal adjustment of the release arm screws will at best be approximate. Much will depend on the fit between the release bearing carrier and the input housing. Also the condition of the bearing. If there is wear between the input housing abd carrier that will allow the face of the bearing to be out of line. It is far better to split it now and sort it once and for all with our further help if necessary.
