MF 52 BackHoe Swinging

Recently had a MF52 get a rotary swing cylinder rebuilt. The Upper locating pin was really locked into place and required 3 hours with torches, pry
bars, and hammers to get out. After removal, I cleaned everything up and lubricated it copiously when reassembling. Now that it is reassembled,
I'm noticing that the backhoe swings quite freely from side to side when not operating the hydraulics. Is it supposed to do that? Before the
rebuild, it was always stiff and you could run down the road without pinning it in place and it would stay right where you left it. Just wondering
if this is normal or not, thank you.

Do you mean swinging its full travel (i.e. is the cylinder stroking)? If so, that's not normal. Either the cylinder is bypassing, the valve is bypassing, or (more likely) some air is still in from when it was apart to get it rebuilt - you may have to cycle it back and forth to full stroke several times to get it all out.

If it's just a little 'shimmy' or wobble from slop in the clevises, bushings, etc., that's totally normal. Whenever I don't have any of my hoes locked/chained they swing back and forth a little with the slop in the pins, etc.

It was cycled multiple times as I also replaced a bunch of hoses and had to cycle all the cylinders to fill the hyrdo. When on even ground, boom pinned in travel position, you can push it full lock to lock. If you put down one of the outriggers, it will swing to the opposite side without any input. The control works to move it left and right perfectly though. The only seals I couldn't get for this were the square cut Back-Up seals for the wing on the main shaft inside the cylinder. They are apparently unobtainable now.

Hmm, that's bamboozling. Something definitely isn't right. Sounds like something's bypassing to me. On level ground the swing controls would probably work fine, even if there was some bypass, because it wouln't take much pressure to swing it. Maybe try the swing controls while giving it some resistance (pushing against something). That might indicate if there's bypassing.

You might try PM'ing the poster of this thread and find out how he solved it. Sounds like he had exactly the same problem:

Hello new hear and am having the same problem as the original poster. Only difference is my engine seems to load very heavy when trying to swing left or right..i can push the boom easily when it is off the ground. I think it is bypassing in the swing arm valves. Is the a supplier that would have these valves to try before i pull the rotor motor off. Thanks

After I rebuilt mine you cannot push it side to side.
you could pull the lines an cap them to find out if it's the valve or rotary cylinder
