MF 590 Gear Box

I have recently got a 1978 MF 590 2wd. It runs fine but I can only find three forward gears. I think the multipower has been removed at some point hence why only 6 speed. Has anyone ever heard of this being done ?

Would it be possible to replace it with the the traditional 8 speed box or does that involve other parts being changed in addition to the gear box ?

Any info gratefully received
