MF-65 Front Hydraulic Pump Project

New User
I have a 1962 MF-65 with an old DU-AL loader with a PTO hydraulic pump.

I will attempt to put a front hydraulic pump on it, and to document the project here.

My plan is to start with the"MF-65 style" 3-hole plate that bolts onto the crank pully.

I got a drill and a left-hand thread tap to modify that plate to drive an"MF-165 style" 13-splined shaft.

From that shaft, it will go to an SAE-style 13-splined shaft pump.

Plumbing will be with hoses made up at our local hose shop.

Parts so far:

"MF-65" 3-hole crank pully plate: https://www.ebay.com/itm/266079378916
"MF-165" female spline drive shaft: https://www.link_disallowed/acatalog/UM83242---Drive-Shaft--14-1-8---Female-Splined--Replaces-707166M92.-189604.html#SID=29400
2.3 CID 13-spline pump: https://amzn.to/3KbAzZg

The idea is to enlarge and re-tap the hole in the "MF-65 style" plate to accept the "MF-165 style" shaft.

Drill to make the drive hole in the plate larger: https://amzn.to/3rKT3cL
Left-hand thread tap: https://amzn.to/3QbKYIq

I expect to have to lengthen the shaft, so I have this 1" ID tubing: https://amzn.to/3O3OD8l

Also a return oil filter: https://amzn.to/3Ot56Es

The DU-AL came with a Prince pump and no filter in the system. I added a filter to the inlet hose, but it causes problems -- especially in cold weather.

Once I have the front MF-65 PTO pump working, I hope to replace the weird DU-AL cylinders with some proper hard-crome-platedrod cylinders.

I will guess that at least some of the links you are adding in your posts are to parts vendors other than Yesterday's Tractors or All States Ag Parts (YT's parent company). Links to competitors are blocked.
In Classic view the link alone may be blocked and in Modern view the entire post is often blocked. That is the case here, your post can be seen in Classic, however at least some of the links don't work, and
none of your post shows up in Modern.

Is your tractor gas or diesel? I remember that one uses a 3 bolt adapter and the other uses a 4 bolt adapter, but don't remember which is which. Also before you start, turn the front wheels all the way to the left and look through the crank hole to see if the center steering arm is going to interfere with the pump shaft.

The return filter you show isn't big enough for the suction side.
Do you know the displacement or the GPMs of your pump? You need to use a large filter on the suction side of the pump (1 1/4 in/ out). I have a Zinga SE25 on my 202 (pump makes around 22GPM @2,200 RPMs). It hasn't given me any trouble. The lowest I would go on the suction is 25 microns, I think 10 will cause problems. Check out Surplus Center.

BTW: some one had a post on here a few months back about adding a pump to a 135? It was very detailed.

Jim:

Thank you for your reply.

Is there a better forum for documenting a project like this? It appears that YT wraps every link and directs it to an error page on their site.

Plus, the YT forum software is way outdated - my password was sent by email in clear text (!)

Originally, I think, YT was soley a forum, right? Not that it matters now, it is what it is, but not being able to share links to the parts of a project is pretty crippling to readers of the posts.

Years ago (2010), I documented some work on this loader on another tractor / farm site (antique tractors forum), but the then operator of that forum decided for some reason to flush all the posts and I do not think they ever recovered. Update: it looks like the domain is still there and it is a Vertical Scope property now. Nothing wrong with Vertical Scope, at least they use the very nice, modern XenForo forum software, and are typically moderated well, but Vertical Scope means they are a commercial web property.

Googling "forum Massey Ferguson 65" it looks like the likely candidates are:

yesterdaystractors
external_link
newagtalk
external_link
tractorbynet

Are there any of those that might be a better fit for documenting this project?

Thanks for your replies.

I get that this is YT's forum and their rules are the rules, but simply mentioning another site (not even a link) gets it redacted? Seems extreme.

Keep in mind that it is the users of the forum are who generate the content, and the conent's usefullness to other members is what google sees - including links. And google is what drives eyes to this forum and by extension to YT's business site.

Well, it is what it is. I'll move along and find a site more interested in being open.

Peace.

To my knowledge this forum has always been provided by Yesterday's Tractors Parts store and has blocked links to competitor's sites. You can email YT Support and discuss the issue with them. The direct email
is: support at yesterdaystractors.com Delete the spaces and change the at to @.

Stan:

With the PTO pump, I used a physically big, and big 140-micron mesh inlet filter. Napa 557114. In warm weather it was OK. In cold weather, the PTO pump would cavitate.

For the front pump project, I will use a proper return filter and not have an inlet filter.

I added a hydraulic pump to my mf65 gas. I had issues turning left, so I found an
center arm that worked for my mf65. My hydraulic comes from a self contained pipe
system with a filter. I added power steering, front bucket that had the self
contained hydraulic piping & added the front hydraulic pump to front shaft.

Welcome to the forums.

I am going to suggest you start a new thread of your own. Describe your tractor, exactly what the problem is, and what you are looking for. I suggest this as some you might have answers will bypass a thread with an old date. Also if the thread is not the same as your issue it will "muddy the waters" as you will end up with responses to the original post mixed in with replies to your post.

I did have issue with left turn. I did grind a little where it was hitting & from the pictures, you can see where hitting on shaft & center arm.
