MF-65 ignition/light switch

I"m stuck,the switch ring around my key switch says OFF,START,L1,L2,THE KEY ITSELF has 4 positions to follow those four designations,yet there are only 3 poles, so I can"t make sense of the L1,L2. Could anyone help me out?

It is engine off, engine on, engine on/lights on, engine off/lights on. Pretty simple when you get used to it. Gave me fits before I understood it...

simple is right,I guess I don't understand the engine off lights on part, but your explanation is right on with the test light. THANKS,alot Arron I really appreciate your help! Rich
