MF135 Bound up?

Have a MF135 with Continental gas engine. Engine was rebuilt about 15 years ago and has very few hours on the rebuild since I moved off the farm. Ran like a top until....fan broke and butchered the radiator, fixed/replaced, leakage probs with carb. Bought new carb and replaced fuel line. No leakage so far. Has sat outside for a year plus. Cleaned up electrical connections to get it running. Battery may need a jump but when I try to start, the engine started to do its thing but now seems like the crank/pistons may be stuck.

Tried to move by wrench (1-1/8") and no joy. How should I proceed?
* Fully charge battery and apply charger start to see if it will turn over?
* Add some lubrication somewhere?
* Other.....?

You can remove the starter and use a pry bar against the teeth of the fly wheel,try it in both directions,if it sounds like metal rubbing on metal take the spark plugs out and squirt a little power steering fluid into each one of the cylinders.

Pull all of the spark plugs and try to turn the engine manually again. Water may have gotten into one or more cylinders and you may have hydraulic locked the piston.

Good news is I got it moving. Bad news is it only moves about 2/3 of a cycle. So I guess it must be binding on the top or bottom of the stroke. Suggestions to proceed? Thanks.

All of the spark plugs are out, I assume? When it stops turning does it stop hard, like it hit something, or does it just get too hard to turn?

If it does not hit a definite stop, turn it to thwhere it gets tight and squirt 8 or 10 squirts of light oil in eack of the spark plug holes and let it sit over night.

Are you sure you do not have a valve stuck open, and hitting a piston, cheers, sibby

It appears to be a stuck valve. How do I fix that? Thanks.

Hi Jay, i have had a little success by spraying penetrating oil onto the valve stem after you remove the valve cover, and tapping with a hammer lightly from side to side of the valve spring retainer
Be aware that the valve may be bent, and may not seat completely , so may be safer to remove the cylinder head and work on it properly if you have doubts mate, cheers, sibby
