MF135 Governor Issue

First Post on here...my son recently bought a well used MF 135 (Continental Z145). It's in fair condition, but discovered that the Governor is not working. I can reach in and move the Governor Arm while it's running and it does not push back (towards the carb, which would be reduced throttle). A friend has a new Governor, in the box, which was never used and I can buy cheap. My question is, what might commonly fail in the Governor. I see there's an arm inside the Timing cover that is pinned to the output shaft. I suspect a roll pin is used and is a remote possibility it has sheared. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance

Not sure what you are referring to...the "compensator spring" is external. It's the spring that connects the throttle linkage to the Governor arm. That is intact. There is, from what I can tell in some images I've looked at, what appears to be maybe a flat spring steel item (seen it referred to as a Bumper spring) that keeps the internal arm in constant contact with the governor assembly. It could be broken but the Governor, I would think, should still function

The governor should look like this picture:

Common failure is for the cage holding the balls to crack/break. Balls/pieces end up in the oil pan and if you're lucky don't take out anything on their journey.

Be careful tensioning the nut on the camshaft when installing the new governor. There was/are some erroneous torque figures posted in manuals for a while. IIRC, torque is 35ft/pounds and the figure published was 85ft/pounds which resulted in broken camshafts. You'll want to double check my figures...

Thanks Pomester...I bought a new in-the-box governor from a buddy. Never used, the bag was still sealed...$35. I suspect it's a relatively easy fix. I have an old MF mechanic friend that says the balls can flat spot, the cage can break, and/or a ridge forms on the concave portion, resulting in the balls not wanting to ride up and push it outward toward the internal arm. I'll post what I find since these tractors are getting of age and I've seen one or two others exhibiting the same lack of throttle response. I'm also aware of the tightening torque which is 35 ft lbs.
