MF165 Power Steering Pump

Hi, Is there any reason why the steering pump oil should come out of the breather on the top of the power steering pump. It seems to get blown out slowly. Could it be the cold weather, or is there a filter in there that may get blocked? No leaks anywhere else at all

Hi,
First of all the system should only be filled to the filler plug when the steering is at full left turn. This might be your problem.
Secondly are you using the correct oil? There seems to be some debate about the correct oil for North America. My MF information for all territories is that Automatic Transmission Fluid or a non-foaming hydraulic oil should be used...not any engine oil. This could also be your problem.
There is a filter in the pump canister and if you have not changed it then you should look on changing it as a priority. It is frequently overlooked. There are normally two sizes of filter fitted to the Plessey type pump which is the most likely one to be fitted. It will be necesary to remove the canister and check the length of the filter you require. A partially blocked filter can cause overheating as well.

Thanks Dave,
I am using the red power steering oil. Is that OK? I am aware re the filling procedure. So it is probably the filter needs a look at. Presumably the nut on the back of the housing undoes that. Are there any seals or gasket i will need if I take it apart?

Hi,
There will be a fibre or copper washer under the domed nut. There is a large O ring around the outside of the pump body. Work the canister off by hand. It is advisable to replace the O ring and washer. Don't use the nut to pull the canister on. Apply plenty of grease around the O ring and tap on gently with a soft hammer ensuring that the positioning tag aligns. It is not uncommon to need a dab of gasket cement on the washer.
