MF245 Exhaust Location

Evidently some MF245s had an exhaust routing down and to the rear of the tractor, and some had one that goes upward above the front cowl. Is there any way to convert this to a downward factory-style routing? Parts available to make the swap? Thank you.

Some of the MF had a removable plate on the exhaust manifold. One hole for under swept muffler and the other for a stack. THe low muffler heats your feet, and the stack heats your face! They made me appreciate a platform tractor.

Which engine do you have?

The parts book shows the options. I think most if not all the parts can be found.

I'll look up the parts diagram online...will buy a book if I buy the tractor.

It's the diesel Perkins.

I was also wondering...it has a big automotive-looking muffler on it but I see they also had a more round-looking/smaller muffler as an option for these vertical exhaust tractors. I can't tell why the difference from the little information I have, wondering if I can replace the fat muffler with the narrower option.

I've always had smaller tractors (<50hp) with the muffler underneath. That configuration has drawbacks, as does the vertical muffler.
The underneath muffler gets smashed when you run over a tree limb, and can start a fire in tall grass or when stopped over a pile of cut hay. The vertical muffler on my MF451 catches on low tree limbs and puffs black smoke right at head-level. As to preference, IMO it's a wash.

Several different manifolds were used. If it has the underslung exhaust, does the exhaust manifold have a plate, held by three cap screws, on the end closest the radiator? If so that manifold can be converted to vertical by moving the plate to the rear port and adding an elbow at the front.

The oval muffler was the common vertical muffler OEM. The round muffler was common underslung muffler.

If you buy it, it can be converted, Parts needed will depend on what is actually there now.

Excellent. Thank you. That oval unit is a big honkin' muffler...!
