mf65 governor linkage

I think I am having trouble with my governor. I have rebiult the carb, adjusted the linkage from the governor arm to the carb, but still seem to have issues with the tractor not getting up to full throttle. I pulled the hood, side panel and fuel tank off so I can see the springs on the rod that runs from the governer to the throttle lever. They seem pretty slack, does anyone know more about this? The whole think seems sloppy to me. My I&T manual doesn't seem to talk about these springs at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Also, while I have my fuel tank out and side panels/hood off, should I do anything else? I have never touched the valves, nor do I have any idea how to adjust them. Do I get to them from the top of the engine? How do you adjust them? Thanks

If you have the Continental G-176 engine, it would be an excellent idea to adjust the valves. They can become very loose and then a pushrod can get out from under a rocker arm.

You should be looking at a vetical bar coming up from the front cover behind the belts/generator. This bar should be linked directly to the throttle on the carburetor. The top hole inthe bar is connected to the throttle lever by an indirect spring setup. Pull the throttle lever, this only pulls spring pressure against the govenor linkage. There is noo direct connection between the throttle lever and the throttle plate. There is an adjustment under the dash, directly above the high/low shifter and the neutral start switch. Follow the throttle shaft to find it. There are also cork washers and preload nuts on the throttlelever incase it creeps.

Thanks Aaron, do you know how much tension should be on the springs? If I back the throttle rod out so it puts more pressure on the spring, it seems like there is a lot of slack when I return it to low idle position. Should I just try and find a happy medium?

Thanks Bob, I would like to adjust the valves, but I have never done it before. My book doesn't give any directions on how to do it, just the clearances I need. would you have any info on how to do this?
