MF65 update

Well some good news, got the old monster freed up and started. Runs smooth but smokes some. Drives good too. Steering is effortless with the power steering. Needs a lot of little things fixed , such as a new tach, complete rewiring, and front grills replaced. Starts almost instantly even if it has set for a week. Replaced the oil filter with a spin on unit. Going to put an alternator on it and get rid of the generator. Also a new seat. Haven't had much time as it is haying season, but thankfully almost done.

I found complete guage sets with the tach for like $40 on eBay. The guages weren't great but the tach was nice for that kind of money. What's wrong with the generator? I like keeping them stock.

I don't really care about stock. I like dependability and generators have been nothing but trouble for me. I can buy a complete rebuild kit for an alternator with low cut in regulator for less than $25 and rebuild it myself in 15 minutes. I've redone several old s-10's and they just go and go with no problems. Also use a volt meter rather than an amp meter, that tells me what condition my battery is in when I first turn the key on. To each his own I guess.

The Perkins runs the tachometer off of the back of the engine driven by the camshaft, so it doesn't need a tach drive on the generator.

This is actually a recommended procedure in older Cat diesels per the maintenance manual for engines that had overheated too often or had idled too long. Remove the air cleaner, start and warm the engine up, and set the rpm to 1800-2000 or so. Take a tablespoonful of Bon Ami, or Barkeepers Friend and let the intake air slowly suck the powder up into the engine. The abrasive in the powder breaks the glaze on the cylinder walls and helps reseat the rings. Make sure you change the oil afterwards.

Sound bad, works good.
