MF85 starter stays engaged?

MF 85 gas tractor starts and runs very rough. backfires some. limped back to shed without much power. Now I think I hear a buzzing sound like the starter is still engaged. 1. Is the starter drawing enough voltage that it makes the tractor run really rough? 2. If the starter has failed to disengage is that a bendix issue or is it a "starter drive" with a bad spring that fails to disengage. I have not disconnected battery cable to starter while the tractor is running yet to see if that clears up anything.
Thanks for your thoughts

If the starter stays engaged the engine isn't going to sound right. And it could be something as simple as your ignition switch is stuck in start and didn't automatically spring back to run.

If the problem persists for more than a few minutes you will kill your starter motor.

Ignition switch or solenoid is causing your problem. Switch may not be going back to the run position or the solenoid is stuck. If you turn the engine off by way of the ignition switch and the start keeps spinning the solenoid is going bad. If it stops then the ignition switch is going bad
