MH 44 special

Helping neighbor piece together his 44 (Possibly 44 Special) that was crudely torn apart by his ex Sil. what we've run into is on this style hydraulic pump, there are two 3/8 inch steel lines coming up from the pump body, one is 3ft long and goes into the top of the oil reservoir behind the grill . The other is from the lower front of pump and dont know what it hooks to?? It was left with about 18 inch of steel line with a brass fitting on the end that goes to nothing in the vicinity. One sketchy diagram vaguely shows a pump like this with a line heading to the rear of the tractor. BUT, we see nowhere to plumb it in.?? I have looked at many pictures of these and none look like it, and most have different configuration and or/pump style . Thanks . ps serial number = 51869p

David thanks for your help. I was watchin when u put injection on your MH. This pumps different than what I've seen. The line on the right goes over the radiator into the top of the reservoir. The LINE on the left comes up and goes to what???? can't see anywhere to tie it in. tractor has 3 point lift and 2 hydraulic couplers . help me if you can!

I think the steel line allows a small amount of oil to the reservoir so that oil in the pump does not get hot. Mine, like DavidG, has a rubber return from the reservoir under the rad, and two metal lines about half or 3/4 inch running inside the tub to the cast manifold under the dash and thence to the control valve to the lift cylinder and outlets.

That pump looks like those found on a diesel engine, where the injection pump fits on the backside of the housing. Mine has the small vertical line, but I don't think it has the other small line. Tractor is original to best of my knowledge. I'll have another look tomorrow.

Thanks Centash! it seems simple. But! that clue about diesel Hmm! makes me wonder. This was a running working tractor so it was hooked to something when disassembled ......

Hmmmm....couple of clues.....I wonder if that pump may have come from a diesel originally, and put on your tractor with the line dead ended....it may have been there to vent the injection pump or lubricate it or something.....Another thing, your engine and the pump are different colours....could your tractor have had an engine swap, from a diesel to a gas....not uncommon, given the diesels reputation for breaking crankshafts
Food for thought...

I know enough history of this tractor that it was a gas engine removed and I just put the "poor-looking" but, "good running" engine in. both blocks were stamped H-260. However prior to the first engine it could a been a Diesel. But it was threaded into something when it was painted and The ID8' tore it apart and flung parts all over hades Thanks again Ben and Dave! can't believe it dont thread nowhere. a Mystery! im leary to plug it and risk Deadheading or not hooking it and spraying oil when it starts!

The serial number you posted has a 'p' which is unusual.....could it be a 'D'....That would indicate tractor originally came with the HD260 diesel. I know this doesn't solve the problem. Maybe just run it a bit and see what happens. Good luck!

Sorry takes me awhile 2 respond , pesky day job.....Hope 2 test fire it soon all new guts in that fugly block with new sleeves pistons and
10-10 bearings. Maybe will give new meaning to "Oil bath" when we spin it! P.s we aint no painter :{)
