Mh44 engine in mh55??

I have a mh 55 diesel with a cracked block. Found a good running 260 gas engine in a 44 for reasonable price. Would the engine/ bellhousing and everything bolt in? Thanks for any advice!!

It will sorta bolt in.....most engine tubs were drilled for the 3 engine sizes...The 33, 44 and 55 engines....using one set of the drilled holes and dowel pins, depending on the engine, at the rear, with another set of holes at the front. Any engine/bell housing combination will fit, BUT....The rad will need to be relocated if an engine other than the original type was installed.....The exhaust hole in the hood is the same for all, but the rad hole and the air cleaner stack hole location are different for each model, 33, 44 or 55. I'm pretty sure the 33 and 44 engine and bell housing will drop in and the output shaft from the clutch housing will line up with the coupler on the trans input shaft, but the 55 models had the belt/pto gearbox in front of the trans, and I don't recall if the input shaft on a 55 trans will line up with the output shaft on a 44 engine. The shaft length may also need to be changed, depending on if you had a short tub 44 or a long tub 44. A bit of careful measuring should show any differences.

I should also mention that the 55 engine is taller than the 44 engine, and the 55 grille has 9 slots vs 8 in the 44 and 33.....so the 55 rad is also taller, making hose connections a bit trickier. It can be done....
