Folks, I have two favorite, once popular, military songs. Below is a link to an English Language version of one by Petula Clark. I will post a link to her French version, which I find even better. I will also post a link to the original German Language version of Sailor by Lolita, which is my favorite.

I will hold back my most favorite military song to see if anyone else posts it.

There are so many. From Durham Town, to Lili Marlene, The ballad of Ira Hayes to The Ballad of ht Green Berets. As a former soldier, they all bring back memories.

If you're not familiar with poet/songwriter Eric Bogle, check him out on YouTube. He has several war-related songs that send chills through you.

Below is a link to Lili Marlene recorded in English by Vera Lynn.

Vera Lynn was enormously popular during WWII and was popularly known as The Armed Forces Sweetheart.

Vera Lynn was knighted by the Queen for her efforts to support British soldiers during WWII. She is Dame Vera Lynn.

Vera, Lynn, now over 100, is still living. Google if interested.

When you say military songs I think of the cadences we sang as we marched or ran. Most would get this thread deleted!

Great selection, Thomas.

The Bridge on the River Kawi is on my top 5 list of Hollywood movies. The Colonel Bogey March defines this great movie.

I liked the music to Colonel Bogey's March until It was the music used for Graduation day parade at Ft .Jackson s.C. when I finished basic training there in 1957. It was played over and over again for most of the day and it got to be quite annoying to me.

It's not the kind of music that many here would listen to, but I'm very partial to the heavy metal band Sabaton. The vast majority of their songs revolve around military history, such as war heroes and last stand battles.
 
Our squad leader, named Allen, sang "I don't know, but I've been told, Sargent's got a heart of gold."
I sang back "Have you heard what's goin' round, Allen's got a nose of brown."

I thought it was not bad, on short notice. He took it fine, and thanked me for "helping troop morale".
 
John Steinbeck in "Once there was a war" has a chapter on the "capture" of Lili Marlene.

With a mention of updated words after the "capture"
 
This one might bring a tear to your eyes ....... sung by John McDermott ...... about an ANZAC soldier from Australia who sailed off to Gallipoli in WWI and lost his legs from an exploding shell, then returned and questions the sense of it all. Takes 8 minutes but worthwhile, a beautiful song. Some of us likely saw the movie Gallipoli.

How about Johnny Horton "Battle of New Orleans" or The Steel Drivers "Sticks that made thunder". If you haven't heard the second one,search it,it's a good one.
 
there is one I cannot find and I am not exactly sure but I think the name of the song is Deck of cards. It is about a soldier who uses his deck of cards like it is his bible and it will may your allergies kick in I have been looking this song for quite some time if someone can remember the name it was written and preformed by a soldier
 
It?s called Deck of cards, and there are at least three I know of who did a version of it. They are all on YouTube.

whispering Bill Anderson did one on the country reunion called Grandpa's Hat i believe. if thats right its new but the best military song I've come across.
