Hi to everyone.
Just purchased a 1972 Ford 4500 Diesel Backhoe .
There is a missing plate underneath
Can someone tell me what it is and what should i check in order for not getting more problems.
By the way , there was oil leaking and i stopped it before any more damage could occur.
Best regards and thank you for having me on this Forum

Hello Chop welcome to YT! It seems you bought a rare
tractor capable of reverse psychology. Maybe more
like it is capable of reverse roles which all in all is not
that uncommon. What I mean is you probably had
intentions of working the tractor, instead the tractor is
going to work you. I am no expert on your particular
machine but know enough to have a pretty good idea
of what you have going on. The plate covers a cavity in
the tractor that is what is referred to as a dry cavity.
No oil should be in there, see link section 03-
Transmission, subsection 07U01 part 3. The area is the
location for the torque converter to sit and spin in. Is
the oil leaking black? If so then it is engine oil from the
rear main crankshaft seal. If this is what you find I
would check the engine oil for being overfull. If it is it is
likely that your injection pump is leaking fuel into the
engine oil causing it to overfill. There is a possibility of
correcting that problem and keeping the engine oil at
the proper level may fix that leak. Secondly, if the fluid
leaking is more clear hydraulic fluid used in the
transmission, then it is coming from
the torque converter seal or other items on the front of
the transmission. Again in section 03, subsection
07U02, I believe there are mislabeled parts in the
diagram, 56 should be the seal. For whatever reason
the orientation of the parts in this 2nd diagram is
opposite of how they actually fit in the housing per the orientation of it in the diagram.
Unfortunately, replacing that seal or the engine rear
main seal requires splitting the tractor. Did the party
selling the tractor overlook telling you about this
problem? Maybe it was bought through an online
auction?

Thank you for advice .
After re inspection , nothing come from the transmission seal. My power steering is way too loose and the hydraulic leak is located exactly over where the missing plate is .
So now what are the possibilities ... Will have to investigate to find the root cause.
Best regards and thank you for your piece of advice

The leak is somewhere up above and running down the
outside of the casting? Or is it coming from inside the
cavity? That tube in there is a transmission pressure
test port which could leak.

That plate covers the bottom bell housing access hole. The leak is probably coming from the line shown in your picture. It's a pressure tap used to test shuttle pressures. You can make a plate out of 10ga. Drill a hole in the center and put a cotter pin in it from the inside to keep the hole from plugging.

Hi, the leak is coming from inside the casting
I have video that shows the leak

Best regards

The primary suspect is your input shaft seal which seals the torque converter to the oil pump. This requires a split to repair. There's a couple of orings in the bottom of the oil divider and the blocker valve gaskets on top of the oil divider (in addition to the pressure tap) that can be accessed without a split, but all other seals are going to require a split to change.

Hello Check Break, thanks for all this accurate info.
Now my job is to do a proper inspection in order to find the issue.
Can you refer me the best manual for this Tractor / Backhoe
I have read numerous comments on how incomplete some of the
manuals are.

Best regards and again, what a good and kind service you offer

Your best bet is probably a Ford reprint on ebay. I'll look more tonight as there's probably another for half the cost, but this set appears to cover the 4spd power reversing transmission.

This site won't allow me to post a link so here's your search term for ebay:

It's $102.43 and sold by Peaceful Creek Auctions.

I am currently shopping for the complete manuals including backhoe

Will keep it posted

And again ... thank you very much !

There's an ID plate on your backhoe with the Model No., and a manual on ebay that covers backhoe models 750, 753 and 755. Look at your ID plate to see what you have. The same seller on ebay (Peaceful Creek) offers a manual covering all backhoe options, multiple model loaders and the base tractor, for $126.47. Sounds like a better option than the prior listing I posted. Search for:
