Mitsubishi GEARED engine Jumped Time. How???

None of the timing marks (cam and IP) line up. How could this happen on a geared engine?

Whole lot of information missing here (running good then quit, new to you, model, etc.) but, to answer your question, it can't "jump time". Are you sure you are not 180 out on the cam?

Someone on another forum mentioned that those marks are only to time the engine initially and do not line up every revolution.

This turned out to be the case, after enough revolutions, all the timing marks line up as they're supposed to. It takes a certain number of times around to get back to marks matching up.

So, why are you this far into it?

A mouse chewed a hole in the air cleaner and it ran unknown hours sucking in dirt. Ring gaps became huge, bores wore close to out of spec. Compression dropped to 200psi and below leading to a hard starting and now non running engine.

So it's time for a rebuild unfortunately. Only 1200 hours on the machine.
