MM UTI LP

I recently ran across an industrial UT with LP. S/N of tractor is 336227H which should make it a 1947. The LP tank is dated 1949. This thing looks like it came from the factory as a LP unit, but I understand a LP option was never offered on the UTIs. Your thoughts/comments?

Most 47's were KEF motor and magneto. Does UTI fall into different category?

Never seen the muffler on a UTI stick up like that. I thought the manifold pointed down and the muffler was down on the side of the engine.

Beginning to think more and more this UTI may be a factory LP set up. Gathered up some info on its engine...its a 283A4, engine number 641965, block numbers are 10A149A and head numbers are 10A4207. Those heads are high compression LP heads! Also in Peterson & Beemer"s book they state that beginning with tractor S/N 334001 in 1947 the UTI used like the later UTI models the 283A4 engines capable of using tractor fuel, gasoline or LP gas. Also the book shows pictures of UTI tractors with exhaust through the hood.

Couldnt a later UTS engine and LP components been put in at some time? They were very common around here LP from the factory. Just wondering. 1947 was some time ago, I have seen many butchered and rigged to fit a specific need or convenience.

Railhead...Thanks for your response. This tractor has not been butchered or jury rigged in any way, it looks like it came from the factory as an LP unit. Its engine number is also a 1947 number. And while I first thought that no UTI LP tractors were produced, I have found evidence that another 1947 UTI LP was built, its S/N is 331775 and it had the KEF engine.

I wasnt implying it had been done crudely but a 283 engine from a later UTS would fit exactly to the rear of that tractor. It could have came from the factory exactly as it sits. The exhaust out the top for a Industrial just doesnt look right...NOT saying it isnt. That would be an easy one and....have I saw some nice jobs and some HACK jobs.

641965 is definitely a 1947 283A4 tractor engine according to McCray's listing, not sure about LP, but 10Axxxx heads did not come along til late 283B4 engines in UB maybe 1954/55. The early LP heads up to early UB should have been GE30J (7.55:1 CR) which were replaced by 10A4206 (8.35:1) in middle of UBs and for Higher Altitudes 10A4207 (9.3:1) - so as a minimum it looks like someone changed to use late High Compression LP heads.
