Model 22 Transmission Fluid

I want to change the fluid in my MH Model 22. What is the best lubricant to put in there. I considered gear oil 80-90W but am concerned it will be too thick in winter.The fluid in there now is milky(water contaminated)

Here is a transmission oil changing procedure I wrote several years ago.

Note it was written for a Ferguson so the sump references etc. are different but the method is still acceptible.

Hi Jeff-oh

From what I understand the MH #22 takes 2 gallons of Fluid. I am referring to the gear case below the shift lever. I had put 80-90w in there after sluicing some diesel thru, but an older neighbour said he thought it may be too stiff. He moved here from Red Deer area where it gets really cold. Thanks

I use 80/90W in my 30 and it's fine. I live in WI and it gets below zero and no problems. I do let it run for 20 min. or so before I use it to warm everything up good if it's really cold out. By the way, check the boot on your shifter. That's where the water gets in. Years ago I had a different 30 that sat outside all the time. I neglected it and when winter came I went to use it and it wouldn't move. Water in the oil was so bad it froze. I was much younger and less wise then. I drug it into the shop and thawed it out overnight. You can't imagine what came out of it when I drained it. Looked like baby s*%t. I did the same by running it around a little with fuel oil in it to flush it and then new oil and a new boot. It didn't break anything (luckily)

If you run it a lot in cold weather, condensation can cause the oil to get milky too.

Thanks. I had stopped in a friends yesterday after I had already put a jug of 80-90w in there. He thought it may be too thick, but every one else thinks it is the right thing. I posted a picture of the tractor with the vintage tractors tonight.

Hi Guys
I got a product called Permatrans from our regional Massey dealership in Vernon B.C. I filled each of the differential, gearbox and PTO with diesel then took my air gun with a chunk of garden hose and blew down into these reservoirs with air; then drained and repeated. It worked well.
