Model 60 flywheel gear/starter grinding

Question for the experts here. I am slowly restoring a Model 60 and the starter bendix was totally worn (concave even.) I've been told that it been grinding for years...then the starter stopped so I've done the following:

- Starter rebuilt: bendix, terminal button, switch, brushes, bushing, armature cleaned, painted....

- Removed ring gear on flywheel; flipped it and beveled edges (not a lot); reheated and reinstalled

- Adjust linkage so bendix is fully extended when starter pedal pushed

Starter is purring like a kitten but I still get a periodic time where the bendix is grinding on the flywheel gear --thoughts on what might be causing this??

When you say " Starter rebuilt: bendix, terminal button, switch, brushes, bushing, armature cleaned, painted...." are saying starter professionally rebuilt, parts mentioned new parts or cleaned? Battery cable condition not mentioned. Sixty five year old battery cables are a very weak link and make trouble shooting your starting system difficult at best.

Make sure the bendix is all the way to the end of the armature shaft before the starter starts to spin to insure it fully engages the ring gear. If the stud is installed backwards under the switch it may start the drive spinning too soon. I've seen this and other "Farmer fixes" cause this to happen.

Dan--new parts not cleaned....not professional, I rebuilt it.

Your thought on weak cable is spot on....had to redo the cable too. Starter runs great now but bendix is not always fully engaged so it grinds.

Randy---excellent point. I'l have to double check that. It seems to start spinning when about half extended. I've put the flywheel back on so will have to wait for the front tires to come back so i can move under the block and tackle area again.

Thinking about Randy's suggestion and the angle of the switch it really made sense. So, took everything apart and tested where starter began to spin.....it was about 2/3rds the way out.

Disassembled the starter, flipped the terminal stud and put starter back together, tested, and started spinning about 95% the way out....major difference. So I'll put starter and flywheel back on tomorrow but I'm guessing this is fixed.

OH...I check my photo archives and I installed the new one the way the old one was....which answers why my father-in-law (it was his tractor) always had issues with grinding
