Model "A" hydraulics question for experts

When I did get my "A" running today -this time with PLENTY of gasoline in the tank - I tried the hydraulics to see if it still functioned. Nope -it did not.

SO - when the lever to the aft mounted hydraulic valve is positioned forward - I think the power lift is supposed to cycle upwards. When the lever is positioned backwards the power lift is supposed to go down. Is this true???

I'm almost sure that it operates this way when thinking back to what our old G used to do. Any one care to enlighten me on the hydraulics operation of this "A" ???

As mentioned below, the PTO must be engaged, and the clutch engaged to make the hydraulic work.

Next, the unit needs to have oil in it...

3rd, if you have a lever and not a pedal, it sounds as if you have power trol, and not power lift. In that case, the appropriate plugs need to be in the back of the unit to engage the rockshaft. If it has
plugs to run a remote cylinder out the back, then the rockshaft will not function until the plugs are switched.

4th, you may try moving the rockshaft with a pipe wrench to see if it is free.

Id suggest you get a manual for your tractor- it will be a big help.

Good advice given here but one thing to consider----the power lift/power-
trol has no down force. The weight on the lift arms provides the down
force. I have a '52 A with power-trol, a '46 A with power lift, a'50 G
with power lift.
