Model A loose wheel

I have a new to me model A. The right wheel keeps slipping off the axel. Actually the wheel only fell off once, no damage and I had just started moving. After that I kept an eye on it and it moves an inch or so every ten minutes. I have moved it back in place twice. I know I have the rear wheel hub clamp tight enough, but it still slips. I am thinking of putting some shims between the hub clamp and the hub. Anyone ever had this problem?

Yes.

It's been brought up here before. You are on the right track with a shim of some sort. I've used old silage plastic- heavy mil, conforms to the shape of the steel, cut off what sticks out. No issues after
that. A heavy grade trash bag would work as well. Others have used strips of steel, aluminum, etc.

For what it's worth, my grandfather had a wheel move out on him driving a new A back from the dealership. It's not a new problem

For shims I would suggest that old crusty feeler gauge(I can t be the only one who has at least one in the tool box)Drill the rivet and save the leftovers,they work on flywheels too.

are you sure clamp bolts are nice and clean and oiled so they can actually tighten to the axle.and everything shiny clean . you might be
getting a false sense with rusted bolts. just suggesting. cant see it needing shims. is that the hub with the 3 bolts tightening into the
cast centre piece?

Yes, the bolts are clean. It looks like the clamp is actually touching the wheel. I have some brass shim stock that I will try. Thanks for all the suggestions.

There is a chance the clamp is bottoming out on the hub before it pulls tight on the axle. As many have said here, adding shims is a viable
and common fix to this problem. If you have the ability, you can also machine the back of the clamp down so that it can pull onto the hub
further before it bottoms out. Good luck, I about lost a wheel on the pulling track on my A this summer.

Most of the time it is not the bolts. It's from over tightening the collar and stretching it to the point that it bottoms out. You are on
the right track with making shims.

That was my first thought (though a Coke can), but then I remembered I had shim stock.

Today I installed some .004" brass shim stock under the hub wedge. It looked like the wedge did not go as far in as before the shims. Drove it around for almost 2 miles with no wheel movement so hopefully that solved the problem.

This may seem kinda flippant, but I wish I had your problem. I would love to be able to move my wheels, but they haven't been moved since Eisenhower was in office on at least one of my As.

Same problem with my A, had to move the wheels in a bit so it would fit on the trailer, 4 days, heat and a 55 gallon drum of PB blaster, finally got them set. Seems they are too loose or so tight it takes a miracle, happy thanksgiving
