Model A, PTO housing question.

My 1950 A is leaking between the pump body #24 and the housing # 34. I have not taken it apart yet. From what I can see on the tractor and the parts diagram there is no gasket. All the bolts are tight. Was thinking of using a thin coat of Ultra Black Permatex sealer. Any other ideas for sealing this.

I believe "gasket shellac" is what was used "back in the day".

Nowadays, a thin smear of "anaerobic gasket maker" flange and joint sealant works GREAT.

Personally, I would not use silicone, although I have seen where others used it in such an application.

I had originally thought of Indian head gasket schellac but the spec is for low pressure applications. Could not find a pressure rating. Will get some anaerobic gasket maker and try that.

When you take it apart, check #24 for a crack at the bottom. Pretty common.

Rodney,
Locktite makes a product called "Gasket Eliminator". Works really well. We used to use it at the dealers on a lot of components parts assemblies. Any good auto parts store will have it. Good Luck!

Took it apart this evening.
Found a crack at the lower left bolt hole.
Will do parts hunting in the next few days.

Permatex aviation form a gasket no. 3 is kind of the modern day "shallac". I'm sure other products already mentioned will work here too
