Model B Pushrod Tubes

On Sunday 46 chief asked how the tappets were oiled. The conversation eventually led to replies about pushrod tubes.

The parts catalogs, PC-330 and PC-676, show that unstyled tractors and '39 & '40 models used 4 tubes, AB1284R. '41 models through the end of production used 2 tubes, AB2739R.

The shop manual, SM-2004 for serial # 96000 and up, shows a set of two tools used to remove and install the tubes. The tool to remove looks similar to the one sunsettractor posted. The one to install is a driver on one end and tapered on the other end to flare the tube on the tappet side to seal the tube. There is no mention of any sealer being used.

Some people were confused by the description in the parts catalog. For example, (set of 4), (4 used). Set of 4 describes how many are in the package when you order 1 of the part number. 4 used means how many are used in this application.

Thank you for the clarification on the quantity used on the later Tractors, there definitely aren't any on the two outer push rod holes on my 48.
They were apparently replaced at some point, but were allowing coolant into the rocker area.
Unfortunately the pulling method I had posted pictures of did not work for me, when I started to tighten the nut on the puller it just pulled the threads out that I had tapped into the brass tubes.
I ran the tap all the way into the tube along with the the threaded puller, no luck so I'll be pulling the head and do it on my bench.
Thanks again...Tom

One of the later heads for the B had no push rod sleeves. It's the same cast number used in the model 50 if I remember correctly.

I agree with what you said about one of the later B heads not having push rod sleeves.

The B parts catalog for serial #s above 96000 show only one part number, AB4204R, with casting numbers B1784R, B2501R, or B2871R.
The 50 parts catalog, for single induction carburetion up to serial # 5015950, shows the same head part number AB4204R and only one casting number, B2871R.

So, the head used on late B's that had no push rod sleeves had a B2871R casting number.
