Model E engine

I just started to collect old engines and bought a
John Deere model E 2 weeks ago and the only way
I can get it to run is by playing with the choke I have
tried to turn the needle valve in and out and still
have to use the choke and I have cleaned the
igniter and checked the fuel line what could be the
problem

I would think the need to choke it would be pretty much NORMAL. Also, is the check valve at the bottom of the fuel dip tube functioning?

that little ball you talk about should be about a 1/4 in long and have a sharp point that goes into the seat at the bottom of the fuel line

I used to have a Fairbanks Morse 6 HP that would not run smooth without a little choke. The adjusting screw was worn in it's threads and was letting air in around it. Put a tight leather washer on the screw with a spring on the screw to hold it tight against the carb housing.
Smoothed right out.

That would explain y it acts like it is flooding out cause all that is in the screen is the little ball is their any place to get the parts I need new?

When you pull the mixer valve out, there should be a line on the mixer tube on the engine. The line needs to be horizontal in order for it to atomize the fuel mixture properly on the JD Model E engines.
