Hi All. Does anyone know the correct procedure as to how the gear shift shaft should be adjusted/position . I know the adjustment feature is under the left floor plate but is there a proper position it's supposed to be in or ? Thanks...

IIRC, the adjustment is so that the gears are properly in mesh when the detent ball is dropped in it's notch, and NOT to put the lever in a specific orientation.

You have three gears forward and one reverse. With the gear shift cover off, slide all the transmission gears into neutral. Make sure the gear shift shaft, ball, socket, quadrant, snap-rings are all in good shape? Glue new gasket to the cover. Only one side. With shifter shaft assembled to cover, shaft in neutral and sit on to transmission in neutral. Put in all cover bolts loose, shift gears into the three forward gears and reverse. Move cover around to get all the gears shifted, let the gear shift lever to fall into the notches of the quadrant cover. Slide cover around until all gears shift and fall into gear equal? Tighten cover and try? If not, adjust again.

The big set screw in the end of the shaft adjusts the shifter rod left or right and the bold holds them together. The square head and locknut keeps the flat on the rod in the correct rotation for the detent. Move the rod to where the forks keep the gears lined up in all gear positions. Turn the set screw a bit at a time and tighten the bolt each time to check the gear positions. Do it with the square head just touching the flat so it can move and tighten both when you get it where you want it.

That shifter shaft (H382R before S/N 10000, H714R for all later tractors) is to be positioned as follows:

“To properly align sliding gears, move shifter shaft to right or left until the second speed gears have full tooth width contact when the gear shifter detent is in the proper notch. Full width tooth contact is obtained when the second speed sliding gear is overshifted by the amount of the bevel on the leading end of the tooth on the gear. Tighten locking cap screw in shifter shaft adjusting screw and set screw with lock nut in top of transmission case.”

The transmission cutaway drawing is of the early tractors. Later tractors had both the setscrew and adjusting screw (“plug”) mounted within a separate housing. The drawing showing the detail of the Shifter Shaft Set Screw is of models “A” and “B”, but is virtually identical to that of the early “H”.

The threaded Shifter Shaft Adjusting Screw (“threaded plug”) can be screwed in or out as required with a 5/8” wide screwdriver blade or slotted screw socket when the capscrew is removed.
