Model L engine replacement

I have heard stories over the years of someone in Nebraska, Kansas, or Oklahoma replacing the L/LA engine with the IH 549 truck engine. Has anyone ever seen one of these? Would make quite a monster. On gas it would likely drink 20 gallons per hour. They must have converted to propane, and towed a tank with them.

Yes.Many years ago there was an article about the engine swap in one of the CASE club magazines. The very clever genius was an active farmer, and may have done the swap to more than 1 LA.

Darrel,

I saw an article about an LI converted over to a 6-71 Detroit some years ago. Talk about a beast, wow. Don

Way back in the early 60's there was an article in a farm magazine I think it was Farm Journal where a guy in Illinois had repowered a 400 and two la" with IHC v8 and Chrysler engines. I think his name was Edwin Bredermeyer. I ran into a article some where a year or two back that those same tractors were someware in Illinois in a museum.Would be cool if somebody would run into them and post some pictures.

I am thinking you may want a electric start one,, if not I will donate you a running "L" with a parts one for your project, also how about installing a LA block it would be starter ready
cnt

A lot of Ls and LAs had GM, Ford and Perkins diesels put in them in the late 1950s and early 60s here in Australia. Some larger Case dealers offered conversion kits and one even set up a sort of production line converting Ls and LAs. At the time 900s and 930s were very expensive to buy here and there were many L and LA used tractors.

They were in the larger R series trucks in the 50's, and used as late as the Fleetstar's and Loadstars in the 70's. I have one in a tandem Fleetstar. Has 10 speed with a 3 speed behind it. Will out pull the 8V71 in my Louisville.

I am not talking about the Dumptor. Just a real beast of an L or LA. The Dumptor is scheduled to arrive here Thursday though.

I have seen number of them with Detroit's in them problem with the higher rpm engines is they run like 6 mph in 1st gear with a engine turning 2-3 times 1100 rpms sorry for the mix up but my offer still stands

I think the article was in Old Abes News, The farmer wanted more power and put a Chrysler 331 hemi in a 400 case, and a 549 IHC truck engine in an L or a LA Case, what i remember the 400 was only a year old when he converted it, apparently did a first class job of it. I loaned out that copy of the mag and never got it back. It's been a long time so I may have my memories wrong. Mike
