How to tell if you have a Deere or Hercules engine.

Hercules was used up through Serial Number L639999.

The Hercules version had a removable flywheel housing that is cast separately from the block.

John Deere engines had a single casting of the engine block and flywheel housing.

I'll add to this that the breather tube on a Hercules is vertical and tucked in behind the grill/radiator.

On a Deere engine, the breather tube is at an angle and sticks out beyond the sheet metal on the left side of the engine.

You can also tell by the spark plug placement, of the JD engines you can get 4 fingers between the plugs, not so on the Hercs.
