Thinking about buying a 3 bottom moldboard
plow, what make and mode number would be
good to pull behind a john deere 4020 in
texas black land. Thanks

An IH plow is hard to beat. But if you want to be 'correct',a JohnDeere plow. You will probably get as many answers here as there are plow owners. LOL However,I would recommend a three point mounted plow for your 4020.Just find a plow that is a fair price in good shape. Something with good local parts availability is a huge plus.Good luck and happy plowing. Steve

I,ve pulled(and owned) several plows over the years. IH has been the best.I currently own 3. However,Oliver and Massey are about equally good.some of the older Case plows will have parts availability issues, however they do good work.I would never again own a JD plow. IMHO,they seem to pull harder and don't do as nice a job rolling and covering.

Just curious Gidtex, a 4020 properly weighted is generally a 5 bottom plow tractor except in hilly ground where you still can plow with 4 bottoms. In my area anyway, a 3 bottom plow will bring the same money as a 4 or 5 bottom plow. So why are you looking for a 3 bottom? Small irregular fields or food plots? Or is the 4020 well worn out? As other poster mentioned White588 3 bottoms are popular.

Shaler,In my area of irrigated western Colorado,a 3 bottom (rollover) is generally all a properly weighted 4020 wants.Back in the day when a 4020 was considered a big tractor,a few guys tried pulling 4 bottoms. Most of those guys went back to 3 bottoms.Maybe Gidtex is in irrigated country and needs a rollover. In that case, IH 314,642,140;White/Oliver 6342;Massey 57,570;Ford145;JohnDeere 835,4200 are popular rollovers.

Oliver figured out plows about the best. Oliver became White. Oliver also made plows for other companies at times, Ford and Case plows used Oliver bottoms at times, etc.

A modern IHC plow is also pretty good.

To be correct, a Deere tractor probably only runs if it?s pulling a Deere plow, I suppose. :) they work too.

Older plows tend to be closely spaced and don?t handle much trash. Newer plows are spaced farther apart and have taller shanks allowing more room for trash to pass through.

Down there in Texas, I think roll over plows and some sort of switching plow is also popular, never see anything like that up here? So maybe we don?t have the best advice from a long ways away.....

What I'd recommend is a model 1250. They're high clearance and very strong. Also, they were factory equipment for later 4020's and beyond. I've got a 4 bottom 1250 that's 18" bottoms; you could modify it to be a 3 bottom, 18" which would make a good companion for your 4020.

Forget what the others are saying about your 4020 needing to pull 4 or 5 bottoms; heavy stick soils like yours would mean 3 bottoms is all you'd want with a stock 4020.

I'm located in Southern IL should you have any interest. Also, I've got a buddy from IN who usually comes/ goes to TX several times a year and sometimes pulls a trailer.

I pull an ih 3x14 and a John Deere 3x14 and there is not an inch of difference in either one as far as how hard they pull I like either one . I also pull a 3x16 ih with cover boards and that thing does an awesome job. Use to pull 5x16 semi mount ihc and that was a lot of plow in hay ground

Three bottoms are nice because they are easy to haul
