Moms Upset......

Went to an auction today (that should be your red flag warning).

As discussed with my mother before hand, there were "lots" of options. 3 different Duramax Trucks (the main goal) 5 late 90's 1/2 and 3/4 ton Chevy trucks, that would be good fixer uppers, and to make some profit on. There was a smaller JD Crawler / loader (too much money, but, auctions can be weird), and even a small JD tractor, that didn't have an engine, but stood potential for a parts machine!

Well, after reading that list above, you are probably thing, Wow! There HAS to be something there he bought.

Negative. . . . . There was something else, something, intriguing. The bidding started, and the potential overwhelmed me. I was caught between my wallet and my crazy desires. And, well, the hammer came down, and I drove it home. . .

So, now the fun part. Mom sees me pull in the drive way, and word for word looks at me when I get out, and says, "why in the he11 did you buy that!!?!?".

Anyone care to guess what I paid for it?

Oops!! Pictures didn't come through! :/

Bryce, you about made my day, or maybe my week! LOL!

My response would be pretty similar to your moms I think. Whatcha gonna do with it? Bryce's street cleaning services? Cheap? Too bad you're so far away.

I have no idea what you paid for it but I'm guessing it was cheap. $500?

The Facts:

1999 Freightliner FL70 Truck;
CAT 3126 Turbo Diesel
Allison Automatic Trans
71,860 miles
9600 something hours

Sweeper is a Elgin "BroomBear". Has hydraulic issues, and the conveyor is bad.

I basically bought the truck for the engine, trans, and wheels / tires. I figure the Alcoa Aluminum wheels, and new tires are worth easily $1500. Kind of thinking about finding a way to transplant the Cat into a 1965 Chevy C60 I bought a month ago. Wouldn't mind having the Allison in there either!! :P

All said and done, there was a minimum bid of $1000, and I bought it for $1250. I think I am already in the black!!! :)

Sell the tires and Allison for whatever you can get and melt the rest. A woman will be less heartache than that Cat...

Daddy always said " there is a sucker born everyday" , looks like you own a large lawn vacuum no need to rake leaves just suckem up . LOL!!! Dad also said " a fool and his money will soon be parted" usually trying to tell me I was a fool for pissing my money off on old tractors.

I've worked on those before. Hate 'em. The conveyor linkages get bent up, and get to the point that you can't adjust them to keep the belt running centered anymore, and they get torn up on the sides. At that point, they're done. Great deal on the truck though, will make a fine drivetrain for something else.

If you think you can buy random duramaxes or powerchokes and make money reselling them, I'd like to hear how you are making it work!

In my neck of the woods you could pull the sweeper off, sell it for scrap and take that money and buy a good flat bed a for it and sell the whole thing for over $6000. They are pretty popular with the hay haulers and stock haulers.

Too bad it's so short. If it runs as good as it looks, it'd be a shame to scrap it. I'd scrap/sell the sweeper, and try to make something out of the truck. There are truck frames being lengthened, and shortened every day.

Reminds me of an old service van Dad bought one time. I remember my oldest brother sitting in it looking around in awe and saying "There has to be a use for this thing!".

I am going to try to resell the whole thing and make some profit off of it first, but, if not....

We are going to yank the engine, trans, and axles, and put all the modern drive train (minus the frame, I think) under my partially restored 1965 Chevy C60. I think it would look BOSS with those big wheels and tires on it!! :)

As far as making something out of this truck, I think it would be a lost cause. The entire inside of the cab is made from factory with 2 of everything. You would have to cut the poor thing apart to be able to get rid of most of the stuff, and it isn't worth it to me. Maybe someone wants a right hand driving hay truck?!!? :P

Bryce: Believe or not I was a sweeper operator several years ago, If you have any question let me know. We have 2 Elgin sweepers running everyday at work.

It's got an awful short wheelbase. Maybe you could take all that sweeper stuff off and sell it for scrap or parts. Then put a short rack on it and go haul house trailers. No good for taking your girl to the drive in movies if you could find one.

She made a few questionable relationship choices, and I opened my mouth, and she canned me!

That was about two months ago. On the hunt again now! ;)

The only question I have right now is where to sell the thing!! I KNOW it is worth more than scrap, at least I really hope so!! :P

Bryce,
You may want to be a bit more careful about keeping your landlord happy or you may soon be looking for a new place to live and someplace new to park your machines, LOL. You are out of high school, so free room and board shouldn't be taken for granted anymore. Keep an eye on which way the wind is blowing, if this item will always be a sore spot try to get rid of it quick even if you take a good loss on it. I'm guessing the second bid bought the truck?

I looked up the website that's on the side of the rig and it looks like they're still in business in Ravensville, WA.
I think i would contact them and see if they have any interest in it. Who knows but they might have contacts or customers who are looking for a used unit.
Triple or quadruple your money and not have to touch it.
But there's got to be a joke about dating and girls in all this.
Take her for a spin and let her co-drive.
See if she's wheeling towards or steering clear of you.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I wonder if a standard 8 foot flat rack for a one ton would fit that? Put a 32 foot aluminum gooseneck livestock trailer behind it and it'd be a pretty nice setup.

Bryce,
What engine powers the sweeper? I buy some engines out of sweepers. if its what I need, you already broke even..
Let me know the make and model..

I think it is PTO Powered off of the truck isn't it? There IS a diesel tank in the back of the sweeper, but I just kind of thought that was for the truck? I'll go look better right now, but, I don't think there is one?

Shoot me an e-mail if you would be willing to help answer a few questions I might have!! Thanks!!

Went out and snooped around. Unless it is something small, or I don't know where I am looking, I am going to say that there isn't another engine on it? I have powered up everything on the machine using the trucks PTO, except for the actual sweeper on the rear of the truck. Can't figure out how to turn that on, but there must be a switch in the cab.

The only thing I found behind the cab, is a large radiator, but upon further inspection, it is an oil cooler, for the hydraulic system.
