More engine work help needed - if I may

I want to use saftey wire on the main bearing nuts instead of cotter pins. I have the stainless steel wire, and have seen pics of the finished job - but have no clue on how to install it other than twist it in such a way that the only way the nut could move is tigtening. Any experienced guys out there that can give me some tips?

TIA,
Dan

Do you have a pair of saftey wire pliers? they are well worth the money. you are right on the way to twist so they could tighten. practice a few times because you can twist the wire too far and it will break. the pliers are avalible at race shops, aircraft supply stores, I got mine from snap-on

Harbor Freight has a pair for $12.99
I am sure there fairly low quality but should work for occasional use .

Still have those rims set back for ya , don't worry they ain't going anywhere and they ain't eating nothing , looks like your hands are full at the present time . Keep those picture coming , we love to see them .

they are probably the same ones snap-on sells for half the price. welcome to todays world where you dont get what you pay for. thats why I bought an 8n instead of a yuppie kubota. (sorry kubota owners)

If you can find some s/w pliers with instructions, go for it. The wire has to be tied correctly or it can be a problem instead. Old jet engine mechanic, 1977-1981. May find instructions on the net. I could do it with vice or even reg pliers now, but if I could I'd use the s/w pliers. A backward S shaped tie (for right handed threads) with the correct # of twists per inch basically says it. HTH

Hers one on ebay though it's still hard to figger how it works without seeing it in use.

Well, I''ll be dang!!

I could do that with a pair of 9" electricak plires, with stainless, or copper.

I was an electrician for 15 years.

I guess now, my only question is, WHY??

I might can imagine on an airplane, what with the speed, and possible vibration of the engine, and air over the prop...

But why on an N tractor?

I have built many engines, proper torque, should handle that, why?

Because I do not want the main bearing nuts (or studs) vibrating loose while running. Ford had them on there originally, nowdays most just use cotter pins. The problem with cotter pins is the entire stud could rotate. Saftey wire keeps both the nut and the stud from turning.

Besides - I have the mechanics wire - might as well use it :-)

I threw away those serrated, lock nut, like things that was on my 8N.

It looked like a half a$$ed plan to me.

Yep , An added drop of loctite definitely wont hurt anything .
I hope nether one of ya leave the ground on yer "N" , maybe just the front tires so you can pucker up a little , but not all fours , he he .

YUPPIE? Come on M A K. Some of us need horse power and big tools for the job we have. I love my N's, but I NEED my Kubota (or John Deere). The last thing anyone who knows me would call me is a yuppie!

Jim - I believed much as M A K does, mostly because these are the tractor dealers you see closer to the big cities and they are expensive. Around Dallas, you only see rich guys whith a few acres who own once - hence the stereotype. These are the first tractors I looked at when I got my 42 acres. However, since then I have had a neighbor come over and do some dirt work around my property and he brought his Kabota with a front loader once instead of his CAT. I will say, those machines can flat out WORK.

Guy down the road cleared 3 lots with one. Pretty handy. He was knocking down the cedar with the frontend loader. He used a land scape rake after he removed all the tree's and smoothed everything out.

Your post really caught my eye. A good friend of mine bought the
plans around 10 years ago and built a Pietenpol from scratch. He
did a really nice job but he did put in a 65HP Continental engine.
I think I have ridden in it 3 times. It is quite a ride. Barrett Jones
