More JD 80 updates.

Busy working on the 80 in between maintenance on some farm trucks. Got the draw bar shortened and new hole drilled. The old one was about 1/4 inch from being pulled through. Bought a new wire harness because the old one had been cut spliced and messed up beyond repair. Working on that as well today I was welding up cracks in tin work and attaching new nuts where they tire out from rusted bolts. Tedious work for sure but seems to be working out good. Work on the 80 may come to a stop for a bit after today. Waiting for parts to show up. Enough for now stay safe.

Looks good, just curious the hole in the draw bar hard to drill? The hole in the draw bar on my 4020 is worn considerably, not to the point of tearing out but enough so any pin size I can get in my attachments bangs around and annoys the heck out of me. Just wondering if there's anything special I'm going to need to make a new hole.

Just weld it up so it is not so sloppy. I welded one up on a Steiger a few years ago. The bottom tang was so worn that the pin would work out if you didn't have something through it. I backed it up to the welder and built it up so it was slightly smaller than the top hole and then ground out the bumps till it was mostly smooth worked fine. I have built up drawbars on others too like our MD was worn down and ovaled in the hole and top of the bar. Built it back up and filled in the hole some then put some hard surfacing on the top and around the hole. that was 50 years ago now.

I've thought about that too, but was thinking it would be hard to get the weld smooth enough so it didn't wear the pins...but I suppose the material will smooth it self out over time. I think you just solved my problem.

Beautiful drawbar job. My dad would repair them like that. Welding harder on hitch pins though.

Hi Mcrafty1. I’ve drilled lots of holes in draw bars before on Cockshutt, Massey Harris and an international W6 and they were easy. Drilled like regular steel. The draw bar on this 80 was a different story. I didn’t have a drill bit big enough so I took it to a friends machine shop and in his big industrial sized machine it was a struggle to get the hole drilled. There was a hard spot in the middle of the draw bar that took the edge off of a really good bit several times before we got through. Make sure you have a good bit and lots of cooling/lubricating oil.

Not using any pto equipment, I presume? The drawbar looks waaaay short in the pic for proper pto shaft to drawbar hole specs now.

It won’t be used on any PTO equipment except maybe a dyno. Shortened up the draw bar for vintage tractor pulling.
