Speaking of lug nuts, or lug bolts, how did they get the name 'lug'?

Why not wheel bolts or wheel nuts?

Websters lists this as one of the definitions: A nut used to secure a wheel on an automotive vehicle
called also lug nut.

But it doesn't say how the term came to be used. It doesn't really align with any of the other many uses of the word...

Possibly came from the early automobiles that had rim/tires that attached to lugs on the spider that were not necessary to remove when a tire failed.

They are called ' Wheel nuts ' here Steve , we do try to keep names simple and to not over complicate things , unlike some of our spelllng :)
