More on Tractor Rides.

I mentioned considering insurance when organizing a tractor ride in Tony's post. A few yeas ago I was on a ride in the Texas Hill county and as I was about halfway down a pretty steep hill there was a crash and a big jolt almost knocking me off my tractor. The fellow behind me was driving too fast and was too close when he started downhill. He lost control and crashed into my tractor and almost shoved me into a fairly deep ditch. The basket I had on the 3 point took a lot of the impact and because I was on my MF 50 which has good brakes, I think that is what saved me from serious injury.
Consider, what if I had been on a small tractor like a Farmall B or had a buddy seat on the rear. That would have been bad. I was talking with one of the club board members afterward and he mentioned that before he became involved there was an accident with the people mover but fortunately no injuries. They have not had a people mover since. In their driver's meeting they stress not following too close, use a lower gear, etc. The "basket" is on my Ford in the picture. The other pic is the kind of hills we traverse.

Bad things can happen I've learned to expect the worst, then when it doesn't happen, I'm pleasantly surprised, I know that's a very pessimistic attitude, but it has worked well for me, I'm always prepared for the worst, so that I can enjoy the best just be prepared for bad things to happen because they can

Basic problem is that it's turning into tractors racing.

That is very near the same set up I made for my Ford 8N

Something similar happened to me on a ride. The ride was going up a long rather steep hill with many guys gearing down. I had my Farmall M in high 4th and going along very well but the M behind me decided to pass me so as not to change gears. I'm glad the ditch was shallow! At the next stop, I asked him why he was in such a hurry to cause an accident. He didn't like it!

On our fall poker run, we always stop at a local orchard for 45 minutes or so to draw a card, get something to eat off a food truck, use the bathroom, whatever. A year ago, we were going out through the orchard to get to the road behind. There was a young girl in a Farmall B trying to go up a hill in road gear and she killed it. She kept rolling back when she'd restart it, then she'd try to take off in road gear and kill it again. She was getting way to close, so I turned so my front tire on my wide front tractor lined up with her back tire. It was a good thing I did because she finally rolled back far enough to hit me and it was pretty hard. If her seat had hit my grill, it would have pushed it all the way back to the radiator. I didn't dare pull out all the way around her because my wife was behind me and she would have rolled back and hit my other tractor.

There's always 1 ..... or sometimes 2.

I saw similar on another one of these hill country rides. The lady killed her B then kept doing wheelies until someone came over and helped her. I was behind her but had stayed way back and was on the other side of the low water crossing.

We’ve had a few things over the years. Worst was a senior lady who drove out to the highway to watch her son go by. Never did get the particulars but after he passed she just took off and got clobbered by someone going down the highway,
Think there was a deputy there for safety but it didn’t work out for her. She got hurt but not bad. Seen a bunch of em come back on a strap, including mine 🤨

I've seen enough dumb stunts during short parades to cause me to stay away from tractor rides, I've never been on one. I've been run into twice and only me getting out of the way prevented the third time.

Church ask for me to furnish tractor and wagon for youth group hay ride.
Was shocked how much weight was on the wagon with all the kids on it.
Got to go down a steep hill on way to covered bridge . I asked all the kids to get off the wagon and walk down the hill.
Was not going to have the tractor roll away from me on the gravel .
They didn’t mind ,kinda enjoy the ride and walk .
Asked me again for the city Christmas parade. Involved a down hill to railroad underpass . I refused just not going to risk a mishap.
