Have heavy duty straight 50 weight motor oil that meets diesel specs. I am thinking about running it in our 8440 during the summer only. The tractor has always had 15w40 run in it and has 7000 hours on the original engine. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

I agree it got to 7000 hours trouble free by running right - saving a couple bucks on oil isnt worth the potential problems

I would find a waste oil burner for that oil. Sure the heck wouldn't run it in anything, short of a gearbox maybe, or a derby car

If you know anybody that still runs a 2 cycle Detroit, give or sell it to them. Those things need all the help they can get to slow down leaks.

That's humorous that someone would mention using it in a Detroit diesel. We used 50 W In a 8v-92 Detroit in a dump truck at a stone quarry I used to work at to try to help with the oil leaks. It seems that the old Detroit diesel engines have a reputation for oil leaks.

Thanks for bringing back old memories.

Sell it to someone with a Harley davidson shovelhead, they all ran straight 50 weight from the factory, and diesel specs are good for them, wish I was closer I would buy it for my 68 Electraglide.
