motor stuck

ok..i am really stumped. I have B414 that I am restoring/ repainting. It ran before I started in on it. I have it mostly together and took the plugs out to check compression. I did no internal motor work except set the valves. So I hit the starter expecting the motor to spin but ii moves about an 1/8" an that is it. Take the starter off and try to pry the the flywheel and no budge. I take the pan off and I don't see anything unusual . Now it has been pressure washed/painted and has sat for a couple of months...but inside my garage. It not completely froze as it moves about 1/8 "..what the heck can be binding the motor???

At my wits end.

It probably rusted enough to seize. Put 2 tablespoons of ATF in each plug hole. using road gear, push the tractor back and forth by hand, with vigor. Do that for 10 minutes, then wait 3 days and do the push pull again. it will get loose. (assumes you are doing this with the clutch pushed in, and plugs out. Jim

washed... hum rusty cyl's? better oil them up , sit a bit and turn back and forth not too hard.

Thanks for your reply..and I know from this board you are "expert"....will a motor get stuck that quick ? although it had been dry ( no oil ) for the last several months. I just never have had this happen and didn't know it could that quick.

I will follow your advice.

Many thanks

It can. If the engine will not turn more than it has been, a stuck valve, or more than one stuck valve can be the issue. DO not force things. Pulling the valve cover, and taking the rocker shaft loose will show you stuck valve that remain down. Jim

your best bet is to continue to turn the engine back and forth with a pry bar. this way you can have a feel of the tightness and not go too far. you will gain each time. 2 months is way too long to have moisture in the cyl's, even 2 days does damage. unless I am missing something here rocking it with the clutch pushed in will not turn the engine back and forth. you always want to start an engine once its been washed.

Yes a engine can lock up just sitting a week or 2 if it is real humid or some hoe gotten water in it. I like to fill the cylinders with ATF and do so on any engine that has sat a long time with out running even if I can turn them over by hand. That way they are lubed up before I try to start them
