Mott Hammer Mower: Onan engine info?

IMG_3467.jpg

I purchased a Mott Hammer Mower today that has an Onan engine on it. Engine will need quite a bit of work to get it running once more.

Can anyone tell me more about this engine from the plate, please. Specifically the horsepower and compression.

I will need to replace at least one piston and rod plus all the rings. I see on ebay you can buy a top end rebuild kit for around $200from a company called Performance Saw Supply.

Is this a good source for these parts?

Thanks for the help.

To bad your so far from me. I have 2 of them that I would let go of

Just web search Onan CCKB, you will get hits with the info you want. The MS appears to mean electric start. The numbers should be factory optional equipment.

A quick look at some info looks like it is 20 hp with a 7 to 1 compression ratio.

What is your goal for this project? How much money are you willing to put in it, specifically the engine?

I know someone that has a ton of unused, brand new Genuine OEM Onan parts (from 1960's-1990's), specifically for those older engines. DM/private message me for more information if you are interested.

Well, I picked up this industrial/commercial version of a Mott Hammer Mower yesterday. Was not aware there were two versions. The T38 is the one I normally see for sale. Mainly for consumer use. Uses a small 8hp Briggs-type engine located at one end of the chassis.

Then there is this version they apparently made for use by states and towns. In fact, this one was, at one time, owned by a town here in Connecticut.

It's a monster. Weighs a ton with very heavy steel components. The dual-piston Onan engine sits more to the center with a long connecting shaft to the drive pulleys at the end.

The prior owner started to work on the engine. One conrod is bent and the piston cracked. It was at this point he gave up.

I have all the parts and would like to repair the motor as I feel this unit will require the power of a 20hp engine if it is to cut the fields I need it to cut at my property in Vermont. I do, however, own a Swisher rough-cut mower and it works fairly well on flat ground.

However, it will not travel over terrain that has dips without getting stuck. The reason I wanted to locate a narrow-base Mott mower. The Mott also seems to leave a smoother, more mulched path of material behind whereas the Swisher leaves a knocked down mess you still need to go back over.

Probably the best site for info on those Onan CCK series engines is over on Smokstak.com.
I had a CCKA in a Miller welder for 40 years. They are great small engines. I put a short block in it once.
I may be getting another one in a whole house generator soon. Going to look at it this week.
