Mounted picker

My dad told me a story ears ago about our neighbor who invented a mounted corn picker. I am not sure if 1 or 2 rows. He kept it locked up where noone could see and contacted implement companies about it. THe story is IH came out to "look" at his idea, and after looking went back and made their own and he got no money. No way to verify the story I guess, but i was wondering if IH had the first mounted picker or mounted 2 row picker.

Well, I searched "Who made the first mounted corn picker?" It said three young men in DeKalb County Illinois. It was called that Continental Corn Picker by Continental Cultor in Ohio. Says Belle City bought the rights in 1930.

My uncle did build a dry bean windrower out of a pickup attachment from an old combine and a binder canvas. Prior to that, they were raked with a side delivery rake. New Holland came out and looked that that. I believe Innes might have been the first one's to actually manufacture it, but I don't know if Claude ever got anything for it or not. Hay mergers are pretty much the same thing.

From what I found in one of my old books, IHC started making a one row mounted in 1928, and a two row in 1929. Somewhere in my stuff, I remember reading that IH got the snapper roll design used on the 234 mounted picker from outside the company. I'll be back if I find more. . .

Study snapping roll design and gathering chain type ang location . Ford offored intercgangeable rubber or steel rolls. Allis had early stripper plate design over rolls . the IH 234 was similar to combine heads with stripper plates over rolls . Later rolls have several stalk chopping designs .

Yeah, without a patent he had no ownership of his idea. Good story though whether true or not.

IHC had engineers ,executives all over the world, who’s knows where they got their ideas for their Skunk Works. Radio controlled tractors in early 30s, no till mounted planters on Ms during 40s .
MM made mounted pickers for Fordson’s in very early 20s .
