mounting tire

I was mounting a 38 in tire last night the bead jumped off the rim.Well I am lucky it knocked me out cold split mt head . After I came to I couldnt figure out why I was lying on the garage floor Then i saw the tire half off the rim, So after a trip to the ER five stitches xrays and a cat scan I am home and still alive .Br careful out there you never know when something will happen

I'm having a little trouble picturing how that happened.

Did the tire pop out far enough to whack you, or did a tire tool get you or what?

If you know, that is. I can see where the answer might be "Beats the heck outta me!"

You are lucky. Air"n up tractor tires scare me. Buddy of mine found his grandfather on the shop floor with a combine tire off the rim. Some how it knocked him up in the air. He did not go out the roof but did bust several of the lathes and dinted the tin. Be carful.

Yep if you don't know waht your doing they can KILL you, and even if you know what your doing one mistake will kill you. I'd seen/known more then one person get hurt/killed by a car tire and tractor tires can be worse.

Glad you are ok, but this made me think of a story I heard. Seems a guy had a habit of sitting on the tire while airing it up to seat the bead. When the bead finally popped on one tire, a piece of his pants and a piece of his butt cheek got set between the rim and tire. Had to have his buddy come and deflate the tire and break the bead.

That's why I pay to have tires mounted for me, I got enough ways to get hurt already. I don't think I can get Field and Road tires for a wheelchair.

Yep, It's a good idea to know where you are standing when doing them. It makes me nervous to have people wanting to help. Just every once in a while a bar flies out when you don't expect it to. They'll get you. BTW back when I was learning I had a tire spoon fly out of a truck tire I was doing and it popped my in the forehead. Really didn't hurt too awful much but sure did bleed. Had my wife put a butterfly bandage on it and went back to work. Knocked some sense in me though.

When I was about 16 I was airing a tire with vent air from dad's butaine tank for my 34 chevy. It was off of the car, and I was kneeling over the tire. It was an old tire, and, I guess I over pressurized it becaust it blew out right in my crotch. You think getting hit with a base ball hurts, you ain't felt hurt like I felt. Stan

I just had a tube put in a tire today. Cost me $45.00 for the service call. As far as I am concerned for that bit of money its not worth my time doing that job myself. They have all the right equipment, know how and taking all the risk. Also do the job about 10 times as fast as I could myself. I will try to do about anything else on a tractor but tires always made me nervous for some reason.

Yup, another reason we always call the tire guys to do it. My dad used to work at a tire shop and I'm sure he's done one or 2 tractor tires, but he doesn't want anything to do with it. Neither do I.

I'd rather call those guys and they'll have it fixed before I could get the bead off.
