Mouse nests in B engine

Looks like mice have built nests in the cylinders of my Deere model B. I have never taken an engine apart. Any tips? Should I take off the hood and gas tank? Thanks, Lou

I have read that it's possible to take out the head and block on a B from underneath.

It seems like there would be enough stuff in the way on top that it would be the easiest in the long run.

Besides, when you have the motor apart, it's a great time to do a physical check on the rest.

you can normally get the head off by removing the carb and exhaust. the block however in my experience is not gonna come out unless you remove the fan shaft. what year B do you have?

How do you know there are mice nest in it? Start it up and give them the what for. I know it possible since we tore apart a engine with oats in the cylinders but can't quite believe it. Has it been sitting a long time????cleddy

Had that happen to a D that I bought one time. No idea how long it sat but both cylinders were packed full of cr**. Good thing was for some reason it kept the bore from getting rusted to the point of pitting it. Stunk like heck taking it apart though.

Not sure about the year, but is is styled and has an electric starter.

When I move the flywheel by hand it only moves about 1/8 of a turn. In one direction it binds up then you have to break it loose.In the other direction it starts to feel like it is pulling a spring. Im afraid to force it because I have no idea what I might break.

You may be surprised what you find on top of the tank and inside the hood. Had a 41 A that had mice nest on top of the tank and their pee left a 6 inch hole in the top of the tank. Russ

Go for it. Start taking it apart. Slowly. Mark everything, and separate the parts according to where you took them off, as you take them off. Its not rocket science. You can do it. It may seem like its too much, but in the long run, with a MANUAL, you will be proud that you learned what these old tractors are all about.

ON 1947 models (starter under the flywheel) and later the head comes out over the side of the frame the block out the bottom of the frame. have done this many times

first make sure values are not stuck, put diesel in cyclinders leave spark plugs out work flywheel back and forth. I just bought a 37 a jd and did this after two weeks put a pipe wrench on fly wheel and used a handy man jack, got it to move a little went in opposite direction after doing this for a couple days got it limbered up now you can turn buy hand and still has compression. Been sitting for at least 30-40 years, but still had antifreeze in radiator. good luck
