Uff-Da!

Ever move a combine without an engine? An experiance not unlike that of trying to push a long chain. :>)

Have just about got the old gal gutted and was to the point of needing the torch, welder and power tools, so it was time to move 'er out of the implement yard and around to the shed where I keep my stuff. Took me and the old H an hour to move it 200 yards.

Unhooked the hoses to the steering cylinder to let the pressure off and steered it using a 5' wrecking bar. Move 6' and change the wheels, move 6' and change the wheels. :>)

Machine on the left is a year older, 3200 engine hours and totally field ready. One on the right has 11,000 separater hours and will be under repairs for an extended period of time yet. :>)

Pullen a stuck or trouble vehicle by yourself.

Been there done that.

Got stuck with the 76 Ford grain truck backing up to the loading chute to load hogs once.

No one else around.

So I get the Hesston 4 wheel drive loader tractor and put it in low low to pull the truck back and get in the truck to steer to hit the chute.

Got close to the chute and set the brake and jumped out to stop the tractor thinking it would spin in the muck.

It didn't spin it broke the chain and ran into a feed shed with the bale tines going thru it and almost upsetting it before I got the clutch in.

Later that day dad asked if I got the hogs loaded OK by myself?

Then he saw the two holes in the side of the feed shed.

Boy did I catch he!! then.

When you are by yourself, ya just learn to “work around” those little irritants. :>)

DId a similar thing last fall, moving a nonrunning Oliver 7600 combine about 200', manuvering around buildings and trying to get it pushed rearend first, up an incline in to a big shed, which was pretty packed already. I feel your pain.

No pain from this quarter Dave; I'm making progress and having the time of my life! :>)

Just as soon as I get those heavy beaters yanked out of her guts, I can head back the other direction and start putting "things on" for a change instead of "taking off".

Hey! I even found ONE good bearing yesterday. I'm tellin' ya, things are really looking up. :>)

No problem. Moved a dead Casr SP 2 miles once. Rear axle pivit was a big pipe, So I shoved a heavy bar into it for extension, with chain, lifted back end up with a 3-point tractor and away we went.

Allen, are you fixing that up for yourself or someone else? What are you harvesting mostly?

For myself 'cause I was the original owner of the machine and "re-bought" it back after 25 years. Gonna make 'er "new" again. :>)

I've already pulled the weights, will remove all the dry bean and corn parts off it, store 'em in a cool dry place and will set the machine up for my wheat.

Had to do a real hard "mental adjustment" over this combine.

For the first few days, I couldn't get past the "What in the heck did they do to my combine?". However, it finally dawns on me that the old slugger has had about a million acres run thru 'er and it would look rough, no matter what and no matter how many owners it has had.

Fact is, it is a good thing that the engine got sold off it. Very, very high hours and getting that separater beater out of there would have been almost next to impossible without coming out thru the roof.

The trick is going to be rebuilding it as cheaply as I can. Still, it's going to be wallet-painful; can aready feel one that coming. :>(

have moved many combines in and out of the shop and even down the road by putting a pipe between the back of tractor and steering axle of combine then removing the hyd hoses to steering cly and connecting the steering cylinder to the tractor hyds and use the tractor hyd controls to steer the combine easy to drive around and put the combine where u want Larry

We use to be set up to move dead combines.
I would unhook the steering cylinder lines and had a set of long hoses made up that hooked from the steering cylinder to the scv on a tractor. They were long enough you could pull the combine from the front or the back and use the scv lever to steer it.

Think we all have been there, I got tired of fighting all that and bought a Landall implement trailer, back up to it winch it on and go, best money I every spent as I move lots of "dead" equipment, my 2 cents worth.

we moved some dead 510 masseys. Used a light pole chained under the frame and chained on the 3pt of the 1086.
'twas recommended that for sharper turns you tie into the hydraulic cylinder for power steering. Of course, that would involve towing the combine forwards, not backwards as we did it.
