Mower deck rust

I will not mention any brand of rust prevention or removal products. What's works for me may not work for you.

I honestly do not think that any paint is good to use on a mower deck.. All of them will wear off quickly. Especially on the underside due to the heat and abrasion. Powder coating is is the best way to coat a deck of you want lasting results.

Other than sandblasting what liquid should I put on a mower deck to kill surface rust before I paint it.

I put used motor oil on mine at the beginning of the mowing season and again halfway through ..

Any phosphoric acid product. There are many. I really like how limescale remover works. You can get it at any restaurant supply store or dairy supply.

If you’re looking for a permanent one-application treatment for the underside, there isn’t any, other than welding up a stainless or aluminum deck. There is just too much abrasion going on under there that will wear off any coating back down to bright metal. Some are better than others for sure, and is certainly contingent on what they’re mowing, but regular maintenance is the only real answer.

But a lot of people just don’t have that drive. Lot of guys can’t be bothered to clean the TOP of their mowers after a few uses much less the underside. I’m sure many of you have seen weeds growing on the top of a brush hog, or seen the tops of ‘70s era haybines rusted out because no one could spend a minute to sweep it off.

Full disclosure… yes, there are weeds on top of my mower right now.

Powder coating peels off in huge flakes. Every single time.

Since you’re asking about rust i presume ur talking out side. Yes body shops have stuff to neutralize it. I don’t know the name of it. As for the inside , nothing works. Just keep it cleaned out. All the acids from grass corrodes stuff and is hard on them spindle brgs. I have even coated mine with the stuff for sealing trans housings. That didn’t work either. It’s basically a sandblaster inside there. And it’s shiny also not rusty.

But before it does that, it holds the corrosive moisture against the metal. If it is thick enough, it never comes off , even after all the metal inside is gone.

2000 era Ford trucks. Powder coated front coil springs. Very likely the top loop will break off because the salt water will lay in the void when the powder coat starts lifting. Salt pits the spring, spring breaks at its smallest diameter.

Depending on how bad its rusted (mine still had some paint left), in my experience, a good wire wheeling and any decent primer and paint and stored out of the sun and weather will work on the top. Nothing will work on the underside.

I have a 29 year old John Deere LX that I bought new. Every Fall, I scrape and wirebrush the underside of the deck and slop on a good, thick coat of Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. I doubt it lasts much past the first mowing the next Spring, but I'm still using the original deck so I'm guessing it does SOME good.

This situation is only because the loose flaps of platsic are shielded from the wind.
