Mower Height

1939 Ford 9N. Trying to get the mower height set and the hydraulics either take it all the way up or all the way down. Also, the hydraulics won't work without the PTO running. Is that right? I like this tractor, but it's driving me to drink

All the N series tractor you have to have the PTO spinning for the hyds to work since the hyd pump is driven off the PTO shaft. Plus you have another factor on the 9N and 2N they do not have position control only draft control so you need stop chains so make it so when you lower a brush hog the chains hold the brush hog at a set height.

Yep, that's right.
One of the improvements included with the 8N and later
tractors was position control so the 3pt would stay where
you put it. PTO still has to be running on either model.

You can add it to a 9N with the bolt on Zane Thang.

You can also use a set of limiter chains to hold the mower.
Set them to the length you want and then just set it down
on the chains every time.

Does anyone sell these limiter chains? I don't have a drill bit large enough to make the holes. Thanks for the help

ebluvr, you might want to consider getting a Zane Thang. I bought one for my '44 2N many years ago and it work like a charm for all my needs including mowing and bladeing. It's a simple, well made mechanical device that converts your tractor from draft control to position control. Installs in just a few minutes with simple hand tools and can be removed (or temporarily disabled) just as easily in case you need draft control for plowing. From my viewpoint it's better than chains since you can adjust the height anywhere you want it from the driver's seat with the control lever.

I don't blame you Kevin, I have both as well.
Just depends on the job at hand.
The chains take the weight off the hydraulics to boot.

This website sells the limiter chain kit. Search for 'mower deck height stabilizer kit'. It took a little searching. Price- $29.03. I have a set and they work well.

I've chained my mower forever. Easy to set and go.

Get two 1/4 inch chains about 3ft long, two round 1/2 "S" hooks and two 5/16 cleavises.

On my 8N I pulled the lower three-point pin and reinstalled with the S hooks on it. Drilled two 5/16ths holes in the lower A-frame of the mower and connected the chains and cleavises. Measured the chain out with the mower in the lowest position then cut off extra links.

I only use 4-5 links from the highest to the lowest position I mow.

Cost me about $10 total.

I also suggest as others have suggested get the ZaneThang for position control and add chains to take the weight off the hydraulics.

No mine has four wheels. Plus the roller in front. But I have a section that I don't mow as low as the rest. The mower adjust from 2" to 6", that one section I mow at about 8".

Our part of the country I guess. I've always called a rotory mower a bush hog. Not to be confused with "Bush Hog".
