Mowers - Rough Cut and Finish

I think the $350/$400 range is about right for a 5' rough cut mower, but what is a good, fair price for a 6'? Everybody and their brother has a 5' for sale, but 6' ers seem to be a little harder to come by. I've seen a couple on craigslist here recently but they're all asking $1000+ for LandPride, Rhino, etc which I know those are both heavy, high end mowers. There is a 6' Howse for $850. Are these about right?

Along the same lines, what is a good, fair price for a 6' finish mower? Around here the one's I've seen that would be worth purchasing range from $650-$2000. Are these prices in line with the going rate?

Fifteen years ago I paid over $3K for my new Woods 72 finish mower. My guess is they did not get any cheaper.

Of the 20+ implements around here, the one that gets the most work is the finish mower. That's about 2 hours a week, 28 weeks a year.

My primary criteria for buying one were durability, ease of maintenance (belt tightening, lube & blade replacement)local parts availability & initial cost.

I've not been disappointed w/ the 72" Caroni that I purchased new 2 years ago for $1400. It's now $1500. (see the link)

It replaced another 72" Caroni that I purchased used in 1999 for $700. It was at least 10 years old when I bought it. I sold it to my neighbor for the same amount 2 years ago. I had replaced all 3 "quills" over the 13 years that I owned it. I figure he has 5 more years left in it; more if he'd put his wife's car outside & keep the mower in the garage!

I paid $250 for my 6' KK, but that was at action. Spent maybe another $100 in belt, blades and bearings. Thought I'd need tires since they were pneumatic, but Slime is a wonderful product. It gets a 2 hour workout every week during the summer.

I had a 5' Caroni and it was a good mower, but the KK is heavier built and parts are easier to get in my area. I sold it for $450.

For a good used unit expect to pay $500-$800. Unless you want a high end Land Pride, etc.

Location is a big thing. Here, with all the "acreage" owners and lake homes a 6 foot finish mower isn't cheap because demand is high. Ruff or brush cutters are less. I bought a 6' KK brush mower near new for 450. A well used but repairable Woods 5 foot finish was 600.

I wanted to buy a 6 ft woods belly mower for my IH C, so I put a want ad on YT and got many calls.

I had a very difficult time selling the 5 ft woods belly mower I replaced. Listed it on YT. Took months because the mower, pulley and brackets were for an IH C, but the buyer was happy.

Try using searchtempest.com. It searches all craisglist for what you are looking for.

If I were you I would put a want ad on YT and craigs.

I have a 6 ft woods finish mower on Jubilee. It's been a good solid mower. Last year I had to replace the oil seal in gear box. I went to town and got a new seal for little to nothing. Both my woods mowers will last my life time.

Thank you everyone for the info. As of now, the rough cut is 1st on the priority list and the one I have the most need for mowing pasture.

The finish mower is one of those things I would like to have one but I don't know what I would do with it because our yard is too small to use the tractor. That being said, like everything else, I don't have one therefore I have no uses for it but once I have one I'll come up with all kinds of uses for it.

Are you planning to put this on an N?
A 6' brush mower is a bit much for an N.
Aside from not having enough HP to fully utilize it the N just isn't a big enough platform to heft it around. Not stable if you have any hills or slopes, etc. Remember, much of that weight is very far back behind the 3 point.
Jube, Hundred or Thousand works much better on a 6'. And a 5' for an N.
As for a finish mower then a 6' is just about right as you aren't carrying it on the tractor much. Mostly they just trail behind the tractor.

If you don't have rocks and big stumps to worry about, a finish mower can cut 1/2 brush without hurting it. If grass gets too tall, I just raise mower and cut it multiple times. I like a 6 ft finish mower over a 48 inch riding mower.

No, 95% of the brush hog's work will be done on my new to me 43 hp Case 1190. It's 6' wide and I figured on just sticking to a 6' mower so that I could still put it on the 2N if I needed to for some reason...just take small bites so as to not over load it.

No worries on slopes, everything I've got is flat, or flat enough to be considered flat.

Same story with the finish mower, get a 6' so it will cover the 1190's tires if needed but it would most likely spend the majority of its time on the 2N.

I am well pleased with my 5' Kingkutter behind my 2N..
